He said that martial arts doesn't involve hitting someone while they are down and implied that a MMA fighter who employs GNP is not a respectful person. Both of those statements are extremely stupid, demonstrably counter-factual, and in the case of the latter, disrespectful itself.
And yes, he does say that MMA matches that take place in a cage are "too violent". -

Ah yeah... sorry my mistake - he does say its too violent. To which I say "MMA is not too violent, its violence is just about right".
I guess his idea of fighting and martial arts is not about hitting people when they're down - I guess he doesn't know that alot of fighters are at their best when they're on their back (BJJ players). -

I really think he's talking about the morality of what the rules allow, not about kickboxing vs. grappling. Different cultures have very different expectations about what is ethical in combat sports vs. actual warfare or life-or-death self defense.
Case in point: when amateur boxing was introduced to Japan in the late 1800s, it was eagerly taken up by university students but in a highly modified form because intentionally bloodying someone's nose *as sport* was considered highly disrespectful in Japanese culture.Check out the Bullshido.net Western Martial Arts Forum for all things Western, martial and arty.
