Jason Fitzpatrick - BJJ Black Belt?

    Hi,

There was a seminar posted on another forum, where the instructor claims to be a 2nd Degree black belt under a supposed 6th Degree Black Belt - one Jose Barbosa.

Mr. Fitzpatrick is described as "BJJ expert Jason Fitzpatrick: Trained with the legendary Gracie family & Jose Barbosa. Over 13 years in BJJ"

I asked the original poster where he got his information, and he claimed that Jason Fitzpatrick claimed to be the above himself.

    Here is his website: http://www.goshinju-jitsu.co.uk/inst...ofile.php?id=2

He claims on the site the following:

-Over thirty years of training in the martial arts.
-Teaching self-defence armed forces, special forces, military intelligence, police forces and cp security.
    -Black belt (over 10 years.)
-Grades recognised by uk and international governing bodies including Japan,USA and Europe.
-British BJJA Champ in 1995. and gold medal 1996.
    -Close Protection officer.(SIA.)
-Specialist in CQB and weapon work.(martial art weapons and fire arms.)
-Holding Black Belts in different martial arts-
-5 th Dan Dentokan Ju Jitsu.
-4 th Dan Goshin ju jitsu.
    -2 nd Judo.
    - Brazilian Ju Jitsu.
    - 1 th dan Tae kwon .
-Mixed Martial Art Instructor and Consultant.
    - Boxing.
    -Fitness Trainer.
    -Ex-British Army.(Infantry,Airborne and S.F.)
Anyone have any info on him?

A few things jump out at me.

His spelling of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is wrong. I know there are several ways to Romanize the jiu-jitsu kanji, but BJJ practitioners spell it "jiu-jitsu."

Google turns up no results for a British Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association

No results for Jose Barbosa BJJ except for the post you're talking about.

He is not listed on the British Ju-Jitsu Association Black Belt roster:
    http://www.bjjagb.com/index.cfm?page=23

I'm no expert on the UK military, but I thought "Airborne" and "SF" were terms mostly used by the US Army and their UK Army counter parts refer to them as "Paras" and "SAS" respectively.

The wording in the "Black Belts" section is a bit odd:

-Holding Black Belts in different martial arts-
-5 th Dan Dentokan Ju Jitsu.
-4 th Dan Goshin ju jitsu.
    -2 nd Judo.
    - Brazilian Ju Jitsu.
    - 1 th dan Tae kwon .
There is no number/degree next to the 'Brazilian Ju Jitsu' entry, though it is implied, based on inclusion, that he is a Black Belt.

Here you can clearly see him wearing a black belt on the mat with his gi:

    http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pi...d=173367739063

I would like to make mention of the crossed feet on the near-side of the neck during that armbar attempt. The shoulder isn't isolated providing an easy turn-out to cross-sides. But, that is a photo and lacks complete context of how things got to that point.

Another photo in that album also shows him wearing a black belt with a presumed BJJ gi.

Here is an entry from another board announcing a seminar:

boards.ie - View Single Post - MMA related seminar

Jasons part of the seminar will be on BJJ. Jasons Sensei was a man named Jose Barbosa, a Portugese man who moved to Brazil when he was a child. Jose Barbosa trained with the Gracie family, as well as other BJJ schools there, this was long before BJJ was known as we know it today. Sensei Barbosa moved to London in his fifties, and died in 1999 in Barnet England. Jason began training in BJJ in 1987, and was a private direct student of sensei Barbosa, who helped Jason to train with Royce, & Royler Gracie, as well as others. Jason was graded up to 2nd dan under sensei Barbosa, who was a 6th dan himself. Jason trained under sensei Barbosa for 13 years
I can't find any mention of "Jose Barbosa" in the context of BJJ outside of postings related to Mr Fitzpatrick. Of course, a lot of information from the mid-90's and before is hit and miss. I would think that he would be listed *somewhere* as having a black belt under one of the Gracies though.

Also to note is that Jason was a 'private and direct student of sensei Barbosa.' It doesn't sound like there would be any way to verify this training as a result other than to watch a seminar or roll with him.

So in 1999 when he 'conveniently' died, this Barbosa cat was a higher or equal rank in BJJ than were the following people some six years later in 2005 when BJJ.org was last updated?

Renzo, Royce, JJ Machado, Mota Gomes, 'Jacare', Rolker, J. Machado , Royler, C. Machado, Sauer, etc.

    My ass...

BTW - Mr. F. needs to hire a fucking english lit major to fix his webpage. Holy crap!

That's an excellent point RE. Unless you're name was Helio Gracie or in an alternate lineage like Oswaldo Fadda, you were not a sixth degree (or higher) in 1999.

The person who originally posted that thread contacted me privately and said that he never stated that Jose Barbosa was a 6th degree black belt in BJJ. I stated that he had implied it, and that if he wasn't - then who gave Jason his black belt in BJJ.

By "that thread," are you referring to the boards.ie thread that me and jnp linked to above?

I'm trying to find out any info at all on Jason or Mr Barbosa but am coming up terribly short which very surprising for a 2nd and 6th degree BB in BJJ, btw.

I was able to find a few references to a Jose Barbosa doing Judo, mostly in portuguese, so I have no idea what they are really saying.
I also found evidence of a Jason Fitzpatrick competing in the East of Ireland Judo Championships.

His Goshin Ju Jitsu thing seems mostly made up. If I had to venture a guess I would say his instructor had some high level Judo rank, he has a reasonable judo rank, and he made up the Ju Jitsu thing along with his partner and gave himself a rank in it.
I would guess he's had seminars with all of the people he listed.

I'll shoot him an email and see if he'll verify his BJJ credentials.

*Edit: Ok, I attempted to contact them using the form on their website, but was told I "do not have permission to use this form". So their form is broken. I will try to find another way to contact them.

Ok, found an email address for Jason and sent a very polite inquiry about his BJJ rank.
