I thought about bringing it up, but couldn't find anything relevant to the term itself. P.S. Didn't your coach fight in that?

I suspect that is because the matches aren't mixed. Mixed matches in combat sports traditionaly meant ones in which competitors from two distinct groups were allowed to compete against one another, as in (for example)No mention of anything "mixed"
* Black and White boxers when the sport was mostly segregated
* Male and Female boxers
* or (yes really) midget wrestlers and full sized people
Pro wrestling also has/had "Martial Arts" matches (whatever they are). If one were to have a match in the squared circle where a (pro) wrestler was pitted against a non wrestler in a "Martial Arts Match", I suspect the traditional name for it would be either a "Mixed Match Martial Arts" bout or a "Mixed Martial Arts" bout.

Several people have asked why I care about this topic. For one thing, I am tired of listening to people make stupid arguments that let the definition of "MMA" define the parameters of the sport. Nonsense like "Bruce Lee mixed arts and invented MMA!". Ask folks where it says that anyone actually has to mix anything and you will invariably get a reply like "Dude, its called Mixed Martial Arts for a reason..."

Can we get a book/paper published? Like, A Brief History of Mixed Martial Arts and Freestyle Fighting Competitions. I'm not a historian by trade or training, but I also have a bit of an invested interest in the subject. I think there's definitely a lack of legitimate literature on the subject.

First time you hear the phrase dropped on air during a UFC production is UFC 17 (5/15/98). Goldy looses the phrase "Superbowl of Mixed Martial Arts" and that's the first time you hear it. It was Mixed Match Martial Arts during UFC Ultimate Japan but then it went back to NHB/Reality Fighting/ No Rules Fighting.
