One of my favorites--tai otoshi--is there. Now we just need hiza guruma and uchi mata. . .

A totally different perspective, for those who do striking-based systems with a bow stance, how often is it taught as a tremendous way to swipe someone's balance? If you look at the second frame in seoi nage, it essentially *is* a bow stance.

As a matter of discussion, what's most important?

    1) initial kuzushi
    2) the follow-on kake
    3) having the attitude that "do whatever the f***, you want. I'm going to throw you *NOW*"

Umm, I don't think that was harai. I think it was osoto gari from a slightly different angle than usual.

The third one (uki otoshi) I have never seen done in a comp, nor in randori. There's old footage of Mifune doing it but that's it. I think your timing has to be SUPERB to be able to do it.
I'm pretty certain that's sumi otoshi. Uki otoshi goes to tori's back corner.

As an aside, I've thrown people in randori with uki otoshi. When it works, it's f'ing beautiful. As far as timing goes, in my experience, it's only a tad harder than the timing needed for something like de ashi barai.

From what I've been able to discover, it's not so much the timing that makes it hard. It's that it develops slowly and requires you to keep focused for a relatively longer period of time.

But as a matter of learning, it's damn hard to remember what *not* to do. It's much easier to remember what you *should* do.

Thus, I'll rephrase (if you hate my restatement, respond):

Most important? Knowing when to attempt a throw.

    Looks good.
Although $80/month is a little expensive for Judo (most places go under $50/month, some go like $30/semester).
Go check out the free class.

    Good luck

You're right, it could be weird osoto.
And now I remember, of course I've pulled off ukiotoshi, IN THE KATA....:)

Landing on top of someone is fine and dandy in judo, mma, and subgrappling competitions. That way you land in side control. It may or may not be a good idea in a streetfight. It'd fucking POUND the person into the cement. You learn both. But when going against someone who also knows what's going on, it's very hard to do throws while keeping standing up (depending on the throw).
