"The footpad and the Cane" - Irish stick fighting as self defense

    http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jimmy_f...an/wittman.htm

Very interesting little article from a San Francisco newspaper in 1905, describing how to use a cane in self defense. If we can take the author's word for it, this method s based on traditional Irish stick fighting; the grip he describes definitely is typical of shillelagh technique.

Wow that's a fantastic find! Lots of technical bits there to consider, which should have folks in the Irish Stick Fighting world all a-twitter!

I should also add that this is the earliest "use a cane as a weapon" article I am aware of in the USA.

Very cool. I've never really figured out how to apply that sort of grip in real time.

Unfortunately la canne (and French martial arts generally) are pretty scarce in the U.S. I know that various savate/canne instructors have been based at the Inosanto Academy in LA over the years, but it doesn't look as if they're currently offering any canne classes. Might be worth contacting them anyway to see if they know of any local leads.

Very cool article. When I do single stick I tend to choke up on it (though not so much up in the middle) so I can use the handle to block, strike, and grapple, much like how one may do these things with the handle of a longsword.

Also garyc1 I'm no instructor of la canne but I do a bit of it in the defense dans la rue \ la canne vigny methodologies, so if you are ever around NoHo or the SFV feel free to hit me up.
