Hey Vieux Normand, did you ever work with Gerry Barber (obviously way back in the day)?

I'll be 49 in May. BJJ didn't work out due to scheduling and I didn't do anything all last year. The gym on base where I work is finally offering at least TKD, so i just started doing that again. It's WTF so it's all about jumping around. Great workout and yes, for me, very painful. Muscles ached for a week, but I'm pushing through it. I can still do a spinning heel kick to the shins.

So far there ain't nobody here older than me (a dubious honor). I'm 60, been practicing since my early 20's; most of that time in korean and japanese karate styles, with a stint in Aikido. Trained in BJJ for about 3-4 years, til I was 50. Nowadays, I go to a tang soo do class 2-3 times a week. At least once a week I spar at least 6 or 7 three minute rounds, light to moderate contact. As I get older, I notice I'm spending less time in class and more time in the gym, trying to stay in some kind of shape.

We got a good group of old codgers in my school. Several are in their 50's, a couple in their 60's. My teacher is 72, and he is still sparring. Our oldest student is 90 years old. He doesnt spar anymore, but he does get out on the floor to practice punches and blocks. He also teaches stand up jiu jitsu to a bunch of kids. He's a real inspiration -- at his age, at lot of people are . . . dead.

Nope. My first out-of-Normandy gigs were clubs owned by brothers named Ballinger and head-bouncered by an Italian named Antonio. He hated how "Tony" sounded in English and insisted on being referred to as "Anthony". That's class.

I just turned 41 today, oh by the way **** ALL of you who are calling the 40's middle aged. Anyway I still heal just as fast from injuries and can train just as hard, no it's not stubbornness or heart it's just I don't give a fuckness and do it anyway. The only thing that really effects my training is the fact that I have become lazy.

Our last fight night we had a 55year old do his first exibition fight.

Otherwise I swim a lot now because I just can't do the volume of training without my body breaking down.

Who, exactly, called the 40s middle-aged?

The 40s are way past middle-aged for any real man who aims to fall in honourable combat and gain a seat at the Warriors' Feast.

Think that's all we'll do, huh?

Better do some re-reading: you left out the most fun part.
