Getting behind an oppodent in grappling

Question for all you grapplers out there:

My grappling partner is 18 stone (dont know what it is in pounds sorry) and is about 6 ft 4 and is built like a tree, I on the other hand am not (6ft 1 12 stone)

While grappling him I have always gone for superiority in strength (dont know if there is a technical term), kind of trying to throw them to the side with your strength, unfortunatly this does not work on my parter, his advice to me was to try get behind him and choke him. Fair enoguh, but the problem is that i cannot get behind him to actually perform a choke.

Would any memebrs here know how to counter this problem?

On a side note, is the best way to avoid to be put into locks is to keep your arms moving? Thanks again

aikido has some very good techniques for getting behind you opponent (standing)

Uh what country are you from that uses Stone as a standard of measure?

Also ask your coach. He should be able to help you work out some techniques that work well for your size and style.

I usually wait for people to roll away from me and then latch onto their back like a spider (i.e. arms around neck, hooks in). Even though I have a tough time sinking in chokes or locks it still makes my opponent panic.

The short answer is that to take someone's back they need to make a huge mistake; at least that's what's happened when someone has taken my back.

Well from the starting position, where you are both facing eachother I try to do something to the grip judo people do and try make him lose his balance but he will win everytime, so I am trying to find an alternate way and try not to enter that position.

Do you have an instructor? I only ask because this is very general and basic stuff.

PS I thought the UK was on the Metric system?

sprawl on his takedown and spin to his back
go out the backdoor from guard
from kesa gatame, throw one hook over, then fight the other leg under

Yes, I have an instructor, but I would like to hear different opinions and see which one is most accesable to me.

Well, where I live, the older generation use imperial, while the new generation uses metric, damn my bathroom scales...
