It could only happen in the UK

Dont be so damn blinded by the evil police side of this story FFS.
He moved evidence from the scene of crime, handled it, and then didn't bother to call the police until the next day. Clever...

I would have thought that the CPS would be the more evil in this case
Yes he didn't act in a clever way, that's true, but 5 years?
Also we don't know his motives, he could have felt that the firearm was safer in his possession than being left where it was.
Presumably had he left it where it was he would have had to stand guard over it until the cops arrived and he may not have been able to do that. Leaving a gun where anyone can just take it is also not clever really is it?

Tough. Thems the law, and they are the guidlines. Possession of a firearm in the UK is a strict liability issue. Intent does not matter, its just whether you have one or not. He proved he had one by plonking it down on the chief supers desk.

I mean, if you kill someone, your intention is a legal consideration. But if you have a gun in your posession, your intention is not. That's crazy.

Yep, but thats what strict liability is all about. :)
Have a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strict_liability_(criminal) - yeh its wiki...
I think intent may be misleading. From reading about it, its basically your guilty even if you didn't know about it (I'm no lawyer here...), and minimum sentence for possession of a firearm is 5 years.
Yep, he got shafted, but its his own fault...

Guy Who Pays the Bills and Gets the Death Threats Style: MMA (Retired)
The stupidity here is that the majority of the citizens in the UK have an irrational fear of a particular inanimate object.

Yeh the gun laws in the country are screwed, especially the pistol laws. When they banned pistols outright, only 200,000 people in the whole country actually had pistol licences. The ban was a PR stunt.
