When you roll through with this, are you counting mostly on the momentum of the roll to carry you over or are you also trying to "curl" with your legs to bring him into position?

Yes, especially if he does not open up his half guard. You must roll deep though. If not, it won't work well. If he opens his legs, you will just roll out and escape his 1/2 guard.

Post #14 has me wondering, what are the risks for the attacker's knee?

not much, the opponent doesn't have a very good angle to counter-attack, just roll-thru and keep your heel pressing towards your hips/butt. There is some Russian pretzel opportunity if you get tangled up during your roll or if they are able to hip-out as you turn-in.

I'm having some trouble with this. Basically I'm ending up in a 50/50 position where we both have equal opportunity for a crappy calf crusher. So instead of any kind of knee bar, I'm left trying either a toe hold or a half hearted calf crusher but pressing against my own hamstring (and therefor not effective).

Are you reaching thru deeply enough? For Steve's demo, it's his right arm -IIRC- and it's like you're chasing your tail. There's a moment where you can "expand" a bit to open him up. You don't want to stay balled-up the whole time.

    Is that helpful?

I think I get what you are saying. After watching that clip again I think I was basically stalling out about 3/4 of the way through and ending up in a 50/50 calf crusher spot as mentioned. It looks like Steve is rolling further through and basically forcing the other person onto their side (as opposed to you both being on your back). I like this technique, I'm just inexperienced with leg locks so I'm trying to piece this together. I'd love to incorporate more sambo into my game.

Cool, commit to the roll like you'd commit to a throw.

Sorry it took me a wile to get back on here... injured again... Anyway, the issue I was having with this is when I would go for the roll Iím having a hard time keeping/grabbing the foot. Maybe I'm doing something wrong with my legs pre roll? Maybe its cause my legs are so large?
Another problem maybe that I havenít really got to figure out the second part of the move- kneebar back up.

Whatís happening a lot for me is I roll (short/in place), opponent panics (almost always lol), and it either gives me the opportunity to grab quick toe hold or a chance to scramble around their guard when the legs become unlace.
