WEC: Ed Ratcliff Vs. Donald Cerrone - Dec. 19, 2009

World Extreme Cagefighting: Ed Ratcliff Vs. Donald Cerrone

    Date: Dec-19-2009 10:00 PM ET
Event Type: Versus - Live Event
    Location: The Pearl, Nevada

On Saturday, Dec. 19 from The Pearl at The Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, NV, lightweight title contender Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone will take on striker extraordinaire Ed Ratcliff, while in the co-main event, Muay Thai sensation Anthony Njokuani battles former IFL star Chris Horodecki. When the smoke clears on Dec. 19, the world may know who is next in line for a crack at the WEC lightweight champion.

"Four of our top lightweights are going to be competing on Dec. 19, each with his sights set on securing a coveted shot at the world title," WEC GM Reed Harris said. "Cerrone vs. Ratcliff has the potential to be an explosive standup war. We can expect much of the same from Njokuani and Horodecki as well. This is the perfect holiday gift for fans."

In addition to the lightweight fights, two of the world’s top 10 bantamweights will be in action. In an interesting clash of styles, submission ace Rani Yahya will lock horns with the speedy Joseph Benavidez.

Watched some of these fights with no audio, so I'm not 100% sure which fight was which. Best guesses:

    Mizugaki Vs. Jorgensen
    Spoiler:
Jorgensen had good (and numerous) takedowns, but Mizugaki did a pretty good job of scrambling.

    Benavidez Vs. Yahya
    Spoiler:
I usually try to take the ref's side on questionable stoppages, but this was a really early stoppage. Dude got knocked down but was still conscious (head didn't hit the mat), then slipped the follow-up punch. Unfortunately the ref was directly behind the puncher and couldn't tell.

    Njokuani Vs. Horodecki
    Spoiler:
Horodecki has permanently made Njokuani's highlight reel. Do not turn your back on an opponent.

It always amazes me how little chatter the WEC cards get on this site...

As always a much more exciting and entertaining card than any UFC show.

I think in this case, they just got counter-programmed by Strikeforce. That, and WEC's marketing doesn't seem as on top of it as UFC/Strikeforce.

I know I actually forgot WEC was on until I randomly flipped the channel and caught it. Happy I did, now.

I'd have paid to watch this card. Cerrone has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and Njokuani impressed the hell out of me. Thank you VS. for some of the best free fights I've seen in some time. and LOL at Horocecki getting his head smashed in with his back turned. Dummy.

Why don't these guys get more press? The fights are action packed, the guys get gassed WAY less than their larger counterparts, and the skill level of these fighters is comparable to nearly any other organization.

I'm actually kind of wishing I watched Strikeforce, because my understanding is that WEC is being re-aired this weekend?
