Considering that there are a number of fighters from the bareknuckle MMA days in the 90's who still compete today, I'd have to say that the perceived brutality is not consistent with reality. Can't imagine the shelf life of most of these fighters being too long, the injuries must be pretty severe and constant. -

They looked like shuto strikes to me to the side of the ear and neck, interesting to see guys bringing in more strikes when the gloves are off though. There have to be a reasonably high number of fatalities in that sport, I mean jumping with both feet onto a dudes head is going to cause damage. First time I've ever seen anything nastier than Pride before, this stuff is pretty damn badass.

No. Jesus Christ, this was already established years ago and has been going on for a really long-ass time. Haven't you ever even heard of the UFC?There have to be a reasonably high number of fatalities in that sport,

Forgot about the first few UFC's alright, there was some vicious head stomping and beating unconscious opponents back then. I suppose now that MMA is so big and you've got the likes of Pride, UFC, Cage Rage etc with pretty comprehensive rules that this type of stuff just doesn't really get OUT there that much. It seems to be huge in Brazil though - interested in watching more for sure.
