Frankly, I was not that surprised that the filmmaker couldn't find schools to talk to him. Look around your gym sometime.
This is true. For example, I have worked in a office with an openly gay co-worker. I didn't think twice about it and honestly I thought no one else in the office did either. But I found out months later we had 4 fundamental Christians (like creationism/bible is the word of god and law types) in the office. I had no idea their religious views and only found out when they refused to work with their openly gay co-worker simply due to him being gay.

You never know how people react till confronted with the issue. Hell, I never met anyone openly gay till college, and it only after having friends and dorm-mates that were openly gay did I realize it didn't bother me at all. Until then I never really thought about the issue nor cared. While I am saddened by this video, I am not surprised. Gay people are still met with prejudice and hatred in much of the US. And in places that it's not openly attacked, their is still an large undertone of "I rather not deal with that issue" aka "Don't ask/Don't tell"

I am absolutely sure nobody would ever be kicked out of our school for being gay.

I'm aware of the political views of many of them, not all. It's a mix. I'm sure there are some bigots in there (just as everywhere in the world), but they generally keep their mouths shut, apparently.

There are absolutely some homophobic people in my gym. Like I said, there are people who feel the need to re-affirm their heterosexuality by cracking jokes implying someone's gay. I even hear the stray "fag" as a pejorative now and then.

I don't recall any openly gay people in the gym, but it's possible. I have spoken openly about dating transgendered people in front of people from my gym. I have spoken openly about having dated a guy back in the day. I'm not gay but I'm close enough to raise the ire of anyone who really has a problem. I have yet to hear anything but I speak with confidence when I say I'd have the backing of my coach and team mates if anyone decided they had a problem.

The only difference between today and 20 years ago is mobile phones, the internet and poor music......Society hasnt evolved and probably never will, we will always judge what is different and choose not to understand what is confronting to our own beliefs......
