Typical FMA class outside of the Philippines

A few questions to the FMA people here:

    a) How large is an average class where you train?

    b) How many of the regular students have previous MA training?

    c) How many Filipino or Filipino-Americans (or Filipino-___________) are there in your class?

    d) How long is the class?

At our club, the average class is 15 students. About half have previous MA experience. All all Filipinos, except for 5 foreign students. The class is two hours long.

For the sake of clarity, I train in the UK.

    a) average is 10 people. Maximum is 14. Apparently we get enquiries every week but generally they are turned away to keep the class reasonably small.

    b) 12 of the 14 have previous MA experience from a variety of arts. Wado Ryu Karate, JKD, BJJ mainly though.

    c) None. That said, there are not many Filipinos in my area generally so it's to be expected I guess. I know that there are several Filipinos training around the country but I think mainly in London.

    d) 2 hours

My school was pretty small but here goes:

    a) Average class, between 5 - 15. At least twice a week, sometimes more for events.

    b) At least half have some training in other arts. The stuff we do tends to attract people from other styles. Even if they don't want to play with us exclusively, they all seem to see value in what we do, and want to supplement their main art. So we get a lot of guest students at random.

    c) Our school in Portland only had one Filipino, and he wasn't a student. The main School in S.F. has many. Id' say at least half the students there are pinoy.

    d) Classes are from 1.5 hours (normal schedule) to 2.5 hours (if we just don't want to stop yet). It is encouraged for students to continue training after class officially ends if the want to, and not uncommon at all for them to meet informally with teachers or each other outside of class to go over techniques.

There was a larger Kambotan (sp?) school in the area that was not a "Mcdojo", but was far more formal in their practices. (Belts n' branded outfits n' stuff.)

They seemed to have on average twice as many students as us. About a quarter of them were Filipino. I don't know how long their classes went for.

Good people though. They often would come to play with us, and we would support them in kind.

    a) very small school. previously the average was 3-4 people training including the guro. Now there's just two of us.

    b) 99%. I think just about everyone that's come through had some kind of prior training.

    c)0

    d) 2-2.5 hrs. 2x a week and usually some informal training at the park or my house on the weekends.
