    6. Do not goad a higher rank. After you have been tapped 6 times in 2 minutes do not restart and say "come on bring it".
    I would like to point out another area of douchebaggery within this spectrum, and the one that infuriates me the most.

    "Is that the only thing you can do?"

    Asked to me by sankyu after our newaza randori finished with reverse armbar from guard for the 5th time. Guy kept going for a collar choke inside my guard. Obviously much armbarrage ensued.

    Bro, if I kept getting the same sub 5 times in a row then perhaps YOU'RE the one doing something wrong, not I.

    When I still had my fresh, stiff white belt tied on this old guy shodan kept going footsweep, me on my ass, footsweep, me on my ass, for the whole of the randori session. I never asked him if it were the only thing he could do. It was obvious it wasn't. Rather he was sending me a message : "hey dude I think you're doing something wrong, correct your footwork". And I took it. And he footsweeps me only rarely now. Granted correcting myself when I had only inexperience took time but I'm all the better for it.

    By reverse armbarring you continually I was hoping to send the same message. "hey dude collar chokes from guard are generally a bad idea". But of course nobody listens to me.

    I hate getting goaded when it's not to play around, I have a really short fuse. I tend to anger very easily and it soon turns into frenzied rage. So the story ends with me getting uki-gatame quickly (knee on belly) and putting every ounce of my 158 pounds behind the knee for the rest of the newaza randori bout.

    You bet he didn't like it, and my message passed.

    Man, that is so true! I can relate - running some MT drills I remember my partner, much more time in than I had, kept popping me with hooks. I finally figured out he was telling me to watch my stance, cuz my back hand was too low.

    Hurt a lot, but I did eventually learn a lesson.

    And that's only one - I know I've done it many times, and it isn't always my seniors who "point things out" to me. It's often enough a junior who just sees my f-ing something up and takes the big hole I'm leaving open.

    As the thread title says, STFU and train. Words to live by!

    OMFG new story y'all should love.

    As you know I started wearing my purple belt when I am in BJJ class. New guy in class comes to me to roll and asks if we can start standing. I was not feeling like it so I told him no lets just start down. He insisted we started standing. Again I say no. He still insisted saying he could take a fall.

    So I ask him how long he did Judo and where. He answers with about 4 years with one of the two Judo clubs in town. Since I know pretty much anyone who has done Judo on a regular basis in town I knew he was full of ****.

    So I begin to just smash the kid in throws. The whole time the rest of the guys are laughing. I gave him five minutes of a hell. Every throw ended in an armbar. I hit about 10 throws on him.

    After which I bowed shook his hand and introduced myself as the Judo coach for the academy. He then tells me he had a yellow belt and hasn't trained in 3 years. He was like 18-19 years old. He is my size so I wasn't beating up a little kid mind you.

    So the lesson for the day is listen to your elders. Just because you think you know something doesn't make it so. Only proper and consistent training will allow you skills to be up to par.
    Judo is only gentle for the guy on top.

    being honest

    I agree with the comments posted here- my self when i go to another school or take a seminar - i never say much about what i do-i am there to learn from the instructor- if i think the tactics will help me i take them with me-if i dont i say ok and leave them alone-thinking "you are great " will get you to tap out and in the street probably get you hospitalized-
    remember the MMA champ in calif who chased after a guy on the street and got shot and killed.......terrbile---el lobo blanco (whitewolf)

If they are having that much trouble call over the instructor. If its going to take him some time to get there then switch positions and get more reps in while you wait.

    4. When rolling/sparring with a higher rank belt
    DO THE FUCKING TECHNIQUES YOU LEARNED THAT DAY.

    Generally that is what the instructor is waiting for you to do when you are rolling with him or one of the higher ranks. They want you to do that and most of the times will allow you to work through it to completion with a little resistance.

    5. Tap and tap often. We do not go in the office after class and mark on a chart how many times we made people tap in class. No one is keeping score in the gym. When you hear higher ranks talking about how they made each other tap or what they caught each other in is entirely different than white belt/beginner rolling. Those guys have been training together for many many years. They will go weeks without tapping each other. They are past the ego and now its about getting better and MAKING THEIR TRAINING PARTNERS BETTER. No one gives a rat's ass about your ego. Tap it will make you better.

    6. Do not goad a higher rank. After you have been tapped 6 times in 2 minutes do not restart and say "come on bring it". The next 3-5 minutes should be a living hell. Don't get frustrated either. You are not going to be the next BJ Penn on your first day of class. Hell not even your first year.

    7.Learn from your mistakes. The only people who make mistakes are the ones that are doing something. In the beginning if you are not fucking up you are not learning. The key is not not make the same mistake over and over again. As time goes on you are just making fewer mistakes. You came to class to learn not to have your ego stroked. It takes years to become comfortable in grappling. This is a tedious and heart breaking sport. Just be happy to be on the mat and grappling. It could be worse you could be playing soccer<insert equally mind numbing sport>.

    I could probably list 20 more things but I won't. The thing is your instructor will tell you these things in a nicer way. You will misconstrue his kindness for weakness and blow him off. Then when they jump your **** in front of the class for being a retard you will get your panties in a wad.

    Don't think that I am trying to say you need to kiss your instructor's ass and bow and grovel at their feet. That is not it at all. The reason many of the TMA are the way they are is because of that. BJJ and Judo are not on the level of karate and TKD when it comes to the whole protocol and "tradition" thing. What we do expect from people is a level of respect for someone who has been training for many years and is only looking to teach you the same skills that have given them and their students success in the venues that they choose to compete.
    Thank you. I wish I heard or read this b/f I started BJJ.

    I violated the "5. Tap and tap often" due to my inflated ego and denial thus suffered months of healing on my shoulder. Martial arts without pain and occasional injuries is not a real martial art: Stuff happens when you get real. Too much injury, though, does SLOW you down lots.

    personally I see a lot less ego and delusions in a MMA or BJJ gym than most dojo.

    Indeed, 'beginners' is optional in the thread title.

    Lots of people who aren't beginners have no business instructing in any way. Good practitioner does not necessarily equal good teacher.

    Unless you're an actual instructor, STFU and train.

    Exception: if the instructor specifically asks you to help with the instruction, do so...but only within the parameters set by the instructor.

    this only happens in north American and western Europe countries correct? you wont find this **** in Asia.
