I seem to recall that on the Kungfu (the series) dvd's they made some mention of that being made up. Can anyone else confirm?

yah the thing is I also read somewhere that there was a specific temple in hunan that did do it, so I was wondering if there was any actual legitimacy to the claims

From what I can tell, a lot of what is "known" about the Shaolin Temple is from Wu Xia novels. Someone did a nice article on the staff techniques that we developed there. It seems that a general came in and said "this sucks, here's what we do in the army!", implying that the Temple may not have bben the clearing house for deadly fighting it was thought to be.
Another problem with Chinese history is that when anyone takes over, it seems, they destroy a lot of the old records to make their Dynasty look good.

The problem is further compounded by the Cultural Revolution, which did much to destroy old records related to religious sects and the like, Shaolin probably being on their "to burn" list.

What I am wondering is if the hollywood idea was just fabricated which it most likely was, or if they actually pulled it from any historic knowledge. Isn't harming your body against their religious beliefs?

You're talking hollywood. 80% what looks cool, 20% (at best) historical accuracy.

As for the actual historical records, they are pretty much lost to obscurity. Something is probably still floating out there, but unless you can read Chinese and are willing to dig through hours of obscure historical surveys, you're out of luck.

    Not really.

I should add, there are countless frauds that make up elaborate histories and rituals, that further add to the historic obscurity. These are the worst, since they knowingly muddle already ambiguous waters.
