I think the key is in the term "comfort food." We are talking about people who are self-medicating. Some do it with a drink, others with drugs, some with food.

In truth, its all the same problem, we are using those things because of a problem we are not dealing with.

There were fatties on the BBC breakfast news a few days ago, complaining about getting verbally (And sometimes physically) assaulted when out and about. They want the government to put fatty baiting up there with hate crimes. Throughout the whole interview the only thing I could think was, stop eating then fat ass.

Here the registers take on it: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/10...s_want_backup/

German study shows 'overweight' BMI perfectly healthy

Woebegone British swingbellies have launched a campaign against anti-lardo "hate crime" and discrimination, even as a survey of possibly gutbusting Germans has revealed that being "overweight" is actually not a health hazard.
The British flab-lib campaign is reported today by the BBC, which quotes Kathryn Szrodecki - described elsewhere (and pictured) by the Beeb as "a full-figured woman firm in her belief that to be big is not to be bad" as saying that the long-belted community face a grim life of discrimination and abuse in Blighty.

"I have been discriminated against - I am a YMCA qualified fitness instructor, but I have gone for jobs and been laughed off the premises," the rotund campaigner told the Beeb.

"I have been punched, I have had beer thrown in my face," added globular persecutee Marsha Coupe. "They say 'Move out of the way fatty!'"
"Someone being beaten up should be a crime," commented Szrodecki.
Meanwhile in Germany, most people are judged "overweight" by the famously unreliable Body Mass Index (BMI) method. Top Teutonic boffin Matthias Lenz of the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Natural Sciences of the University of Hamburg decided to look into this, compiling 42 different German health studies together to find out if being in the "overweight" BMI range (as opposed to "ideal" or "healthy") had any negative health consequences.
According to Lenz and his co-authors, being "overweight" (BMI 25 to 30) "does not increase death rates" at any age range, though being "obese" (BMI of 30 or more) does.
Regarding less serious outcomes than death, being "overweight" means an increased risk of heart trouble, but a decreased risk of bone and hip fracture. "Overweight" German men even had a slightly lower risk of dying from cancer.
In summary, the German study-of-studies found that "overall mortality is unchanged by overweight, but increased by 20 per cent by obesity, while extreme obesity raises it by up to 200 per cent... an increased morbidity and mortality risk has been confirmed for being underweight".
The results appear to chime with a recent study out of Canada which showed that being "overweight" was actually somewhat healthier than being "ideal" in terms of lifespan. Being "extremely obese" or "underweight", as in Germany, was a bad idea.
The German study can be read in full here (English pdf).
Meanwhile the UK porker campaigners are demanding San Francisco-style anti-fatscism laws, designed to prevent lardos being unfairly denied housing or jobs. In the UK there is currently no special legal protection for fatties as there is for those persecuted on religious, ethnic or sexual grounds.
Full disclosure: The author is 6'3" and 16 stone, ie one of the overweight. He feels able to survive in today's hefty-hating climate without special legal protection, however; though the memory of being refused a place as cox of a ladies' rowing team many years ago still stings.

Now, to be fair, there are also illnesses that can lead to obesity,
    like hypothroidism.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypothyroidism

Not everyone who is fat has to be a glutton.
However, I'd say 90% of people of my age at least are.

I am one of two or three from my graduating class who hasn't
developed a belly since then, and I don't see myself as particularly in shape.

Too much junkfood, too much beer, too much "but you got to spend your freetime with me" girlfriends. And too much shame when going to the gym and sucking for the first few weeks. - Those are some of the main reasons, IMO.

Not sure if this was already mentioned, but didn't Bryce Dallas claim to eat fat ass spores in a jungle, that made him fat? That, and in B. K. Frantzis' book, Relaxing Into Your Being, he claims to have a chi belly.

Denial isn't just a lake in Canada...

the mother in law gained a lot of weight in a short time. mitrol valve prolapse medication will do that to you. however, she STILL stays active as ****, and is trying to lose the weight in small increments over this calendar year.

my personal favorite story though, i have a friend that throughout college was a queen fatass. we're talking wrong side of 250 and below 5'5.
she was in the queen fatass sorority, and talked weight and exercise with all the other fattys that couldn't run a single mile.

after graduation a lot of the other big'uns got lipoband or gastric bypass and lost a lot of weight. she got steamed veggies, grilled fish, and running shoes and lost a lot of weight and got into good shape.

at homecoming 2 years ago, everybody asked her what she did to drop from 250+ to 160ish. when she said diet and exercise, people that had the surgeries actually got mad at her and accused her of lying.

    people = teh fail

That BMI study really pisses me off. It's going to be used as "evidence" for overweight people to say "See, I'm not unhealthy." That's not at all what it's saying. BMI is so incredibly outdated it shouldn't be used as a measure at all. I'm about 15% body fat right now. By BMI standards I' considered Obese. However, I my resting heartrate is 58, my blood pressure is 110/70. I can run a 5k in my sleep. I can roll hard for an hour with only a handful of minute long breaks. I can spar 3 5 minute rounds no problem. Am I healthy? Absolutely. Am I overweight? By modern standards, just barely, but BMI would have me at severely overweight. I'm about 215. The BMI calcs all say "normal" range is 145-195. At 195 I'd be less than 10% body fat. That's why people don't use BMI any more.

ok i usually just read the posts and laugh but you grouped peoples religion and sexuality as things that people cant "change" and thus not something to make fun of? can you be anymore weak? Make fun of the fat man cause he can lose weight but dont make fun of the muslim or the gay because its not their choice? People are killed daily for converting from Islam, and people daily are choosing to not be gay. come on, everyone should be fair game, we are all equal because we are human, not because we choose to live a certain way. Anything less is demeaning.

Choose not to be gay? Right...Anyways great choice for D-bag of the month, this whole mess gives hard working chunky people trying to get healthier a bad name (I'm one of 'em). In the words of Brian Griffin "I'll give you a hint, PUT THE FORK DOWN! FACE!"

You missed part of that statement.

One's race, gender status/sexual orientation, religion (or lack thereof), are all things that either cannot be changed by the individual, or are the product of choices that are protected by fundamental human freedoms. As such, they deserve no scorn save when they are abused in a manner that would cause harm to an other valid cultural segment of society. Being fat, is not a valid subculture...
