    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Can I give myself a 10th dan?

    dear all

I have my own particular fighting system, which is a blend of okinawan karate and japanese jiu-jitsu. A bit of groundfighting in there also. It's not really a fully developed system, but just my particular style.

How should I proceed? Give it a name? Award myself a high grade? I don't like the titles of "soke" or grandmaster; any alternatives?
Should I start a new association?

I am sure lots of you also have an own style. How do you handle this?

I'm curious about the specific styles you've been training in, and for how long.

karate for allmost 20 years (with a couple of years without training in between), and jujitsu for 10 years
however, in different styles (shito-ryu, shotokan and shorin ryu karate for example) and dojo's

However, I have never instructed a single class, which is why I can not accept the titles of renshi or shihan. Thus, 10th dan might then also be a bit ridiculous. But on the other hand, one is always the best in his or her own style?

If you've achieved significant national or international competitive success in multiple arts over the course of several decades, I have no problem with you creating your own style and naming yourself 10th dan. Hell, even if your national-level competitive success is only in one of the styles over several decades of studying the art, and you only have decades of experience and widely recognized technical excellence in the other art(s), I have no problem.

If you have five years of this and a year of that and you did some seminars of some bullshit and four years of this other thing, I'm gonna be skeptical, and probably think of you as bullshido no matter what organization or paper rank you come up with.

Why would you name your style?Do you plan to open up a school?

Also what ranks you hold in individual martial arts you trained in.

    BTW
    Where are you from?

So how long in each style of Karate and JJ, excluding time off, and not counting seminars?

Correct. Please do not name yourself 10th dan, soke, etc, and please do not found your own system of martial arts.
