I like the bit on the opening page about loving your enemy. Makes me think of the old Dojo press Ashida Kim bit "All true things are accomplished through love and that is the true lesson of the ninja." Because softcore hippie ideals totally have a place in an art designed for tearing people open.

Also, "Way of the Sword and Shield?" Is there any historic example of somebody using a katana with a shield?

The Japanese did not use shields. There are no extant koryu that train in the shield.

The closest you get are the Okinawans, who train with a tortise shell shield and a large knife/machete or short spear.

Over on the E-Budo forum, someone purporting to be one of Dr. Alonzo M. Jones' students is talking about what a badass the Doctor is and how people on the forum should test their skills against the Doctor. From what I gather, Dr. Jones is based in Las Vegas. Now haven't there been some big Throwdowns in Vegas? How about the next time a Vegas Throwdown rolls around, someone down there get contact info for Dr. Jones and invite him to the Throwdown?
