    Hell yeah! Hell no!

How to practive using a fan at full speed?

I like the fan. It's the one weapon I can carry anywhere and not suffer legal issues, for the most part. Yes I have a concealed carry permit and a metal fan doesn't have the stopping power of a 9mm, but it's getting more problematic to carry the pistol.

So, I know everyone is all about "aliveness" in training, which I agree with. But how do you practice with this thing at full speed? The instructor goes with the whole "this is too dangerous" blah blah. We (me and friends) still want to find a way to do it. Bamboo fans shattered when we tried those. Smashing the metal ones into each others vital areas would be bad. Any ideas?

Look up The Dog Brothers. Their methods could be used in this application. I'm not about aliveness when it comes to learning outdated weapons. I do it for the fun. Your instructor is correct, it is dangerous. You can carry a cane just about anywhere you can carry a fan.....

Practicing at full speed isn't nearly as hard as finding a power outlet.

Is this really a serious question?
Calm down, it's only ones and zeros.

Just carry a wrench in your pocket and tell the cops you are a professional bolt tightener.

    Stop ruining the CMA forum.

Hopefully he's only saying that to warn you about pointed bamboo shards being whipped around, and not "fans are teh d34dly!!"

Thing is, the fans are pretty much expected to shatter. They were part of the Chinese TMA arsenal since they were common and expedient in the culture, not because they were a viable weapon. For a contemporary example, it'd be like being taught tricks to use your cell phone as a fist-load - most definitely you won't be calling anyone on it after you've whalloped somebody upside the head with it.

If you want to practice with aliveness, wear a cup, and a facemask that won't let a fan through. As for something to replace your forever-breaking fans, you might want something like this - it's about the same length as a closed fan, and no shattering.

The fan is one of the worst weapons ever. It sucks hard. Seriously your better off just carrying a pen in your pocket.

my pen is in my pants whenever I'm out.

You could always try a "stabbing pen". I don't really know what a stabbing pen is.

    Tactical Pen

True story, the fan is one of the few weapons I've turned down learning, and I love weapon forms....

    Fan.
Not the greatest weapon, it was used as a weapon of
convenience, as they were normally carried in public.
    Hmm. . .
a stick would make a better weapon of opportunity,
but if you insist in spending you valuable training time
on the fan, whatever floats your boat.

I have both practiced, and used the fan at full speed,
half-speed, slo-mo, and fight speed (whatever that is).

"Aliveness" is a concept that really does mean, "fight just
like it's real." It means fight with what uv got, but please
don't kill yourself. It means, use the bamboo fan to where
you find the limits of that weapon, and develop angles and
techniques to allow you to extend it's effectiveness further.

I have had a few custom made wood/ bamboo/ composites
that allowed me to explore power a little further than a fan
"off the rack" and although I haven't found any ligitimate
source on the interwebz, there are places in Asia that make
specialized "fighting" fans that are stress-tested prior to any
sale. I would expect to find some place in the us that does.

Iron fans are great. I did have one confiscated in customs a
number of years ago, though. But, these are not only great
to actually fight with, they are best as trainers. After working
with my 18" iron fan for a while, the bamboo just becomes a blur.

Use the fan against everything. Empty hand, knife, stick, sword,
shinai, staff, even against the draw of a ccw/knife/gun, etc. It
is also a great distraction item for your punches and kicks!

    g'luck!
    `~/

    btw -
chicks at clubs digg it, especially when you fan them!
'though dudes will think ur teH ghey!
Chicks FTW! (wear ur pink shirt!)

Get some protective gear and spar with a short stick the same length as your fan. The fan is best used in the closed position anyway so a short piece of rattan should be suitable to whack and prod each other with while training. Pad yourselves and adjust your intensity as necessary to avoid breaking each other.
