Not all surf rash guards are for warmth. Xcel makes quality girls sizes for around the same price.
Even Under Armour has "heat" and "cold" lines.
Many quality rash guards (The UA ones above for example) are impregnated with triclosan or similar antimicrobial additives, so there is perhaps a small benefit there.
They are far superior to a tshirt in wicking and abrasion resistance.
Some offer compression which is often considered a benefit to females, as mentioned above.
Compression wear can also reduce fatigue.
So yeah, not like a t-shirt at all...
