Jog with walk breaks.
Measure out a 3 mile course. Start out walking for 3 minutes then try to jog for a minute. Keep alternating, Walk, jog.
Do this for a week or two then adjust the time. 2 minutes walking, 2 minutes jogging.
Couple more weeks, 1 minute walking to 3 minutes jogging.
Keep on increasing your jog time but leave that walk break in there until you feel like you can just jog the whole 3 miles.
Next thing you know, your lungs are clear and you're a runner.

Dude, if you're sucking wind, I'd start with the walk/jog and then bring the hard goodness when you're ready.

Provided there is no permanent damage to the tissue, you will recover your lung capacity therefore cardio-vascular endurance. Treat the first months as a rehab process for your lungs (just like recovering from a sports injury). Keep in mind you will be starting at a level around "non-active" (meaning: couch potato). Don't be discouraged. You have to let the lungs heal before you reach a level of healthy individual with your activity level.
Assuming you have no injuries to limit your choices, an easy start is by picking an activity/sport that you enjoy that involves running such as basketball, racquetball or soccer. The game provides a diversion during your "conditioning workout" and with others around it's less likely you'll slack-off. Check your local YMCA /university for recreational leagues or arrange a weekly/twice-a-week game with friends. As your endurance increases branch out or switch activities to invlove longer cardio sessions.
Another option is to set a cardio-goal and train for it. If you like running, train for a local 5 or 10K race. You can down load training programs from the web (look at some of the running mags). You could do the same thing if swimming or bicycling is more to your liking.
Congrats on quiting smoking and Good Luck

ah, try 30 minute walk, and a 10 minute jog. early in the morning.
lifting wieghts will naturally decrease your cardiovascular endurance, because of the extra meat.
running will naturally slim you down, both the activity and its effect are conducive to an increase in cardiovascular ability...you get lighter an you excercise your lungs..
balance the two out....too much weights and you cant move easily. too much running is going to make you a twigwieght...
