Swing sticks. Use blades. Throw in a few empty hand strikes. Maybe a takedown or two and a bit of rudimentary grappling. Call it a fucking day.
be fair, now. some viable systems have more than just a takedown or two and a bit of rudimentary grappling.

This is one of the biggest problems within FMAs.

This should be on the door of every FMA school.

Yep. Certainly I try to cover all the bases, but I know my strikes will never be as good as a Thai boxer, or my throws as good as a judoka or my groundwork as good as a BJJ'er ... and I shouldn't expect them to be

Your point and the point about an art trying to be all things to all people stands. I agree with this. I also think there are some features of Sayoc stuff and some of the other modern Kali... specifically that come out of the Sayoc nexus, that are unique.

An art changes and evolves and the teachers make decisions about the direction of this evolution. In this case a decision was made to evolve and develop material for using points that are taught anyway in the art (template based) and could conceviably be attacked in other ways. This seems logical.

I see this as progress and you know what? they might initially have something put together that is god awful! and from this they might take it apart a few times and eventually develop really good applications.

One thing about strategies in the FMA arts is that a certain luxury exists... Self protection strategies revolve around the use of weapons, so there is a fundamental bottom line, i.e. if I am a really good escrimator and I think a guy will choke me out and stomp on my head, rape my wife... I can pull my blade out. Ditto for multiple attack scenerios... For example the Atenza Kali guys have some wonderful material on multiple attacks... but i digress.

The point is that Atenza, Sayok, etc are modern systems that are evolving and changing... In so doing the base is strong and should not jeapordize people. Consequently I applaud the effort... again it might be varied at first but I would like to see what they come up with.

    Hi Dsimon338,

Do you think it is alright to use a knife against a good grappler or multiple opponents if they are unarmed?

If your life is in danger, yes.

Multiple people beating you can kill you pretty quickly, especially if they get you on your back.
