    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    yet another bullshido instructor

check out this email I sent to Ip Chun (one of Yip Man's sons):
    Greetings,
    >
    > There is an instructor in Austin, Texas named Paul Gerald.
    >
    > He owns The Kung Fu Athletic Academy at 512.292.0808
    >
    > I used to train with him and he claims to be certified as an instructor =
    > by Master Ip Chun
    >
    > He has a photo of the 2 of them engaged in chi sau and an instructor's =
    > certificate on the school wall.
    >
    > He claims to have paid $3000 for 3 days of training w/ Master Ip Chun =
    > and his certification
    >
    > He said he was taught the dummy in 2 days.
    >
    > Is he legit or is he a fraud?
    >
    > Sincerely and With Respect,
    >
    > much love

    And His Reply:
    Hi, thanks for the e-mail.

Mr. Paul Gerald is NOT an instructor for nor ceritified by Sifu Ip Chun. Many, many instructors have photos taken with Sifu at classes and seminars, that does not even mean they have actually trained with him. As for certification, only those students listed on Sifu's web site www.ipchun.org are certified. The certifying officer, Shaun Rawcliffe can be contacted via www.wingchun.co.uk for further verification.

Sifu does not, nor would not, charge $3000 for training, he has a fixed fee for all his students.

Sifu does not, nor would not, claim to be able to teach the dummy in 3 days!

If this individual has visited Hong Kong, or has appliede via the Internet, he may have an instructors certificate from the Ving Tsun Athletic Association, which if Sifu was chairman at that time he would have signed.

The VTAA is run by a committee of Yip Man's students and will issue certificates to any Wing Chun instructor who is currently teaching for a fee of $120. It is not proof of anything other than that individual is teaching and has paid a fee!

Regards on behalf of Sifu Ip Chun.

it's moneymaking practices like this that create more mess and confusion within the wing chun community. What is this cert for then??

This is somewhat ironic as many question Yip Chun's claim of being qualified to teach the style...

The irony has not escaped me

Wing Chun is a fantastic art.

And it sickens me to see frauds exploit it for cash.

I have heard those question Yip Chun's credentials

However, I have know personal experience to offer on this

regardless of being authorized to teach or not I can almost sympathsize with them at times...many people only care about certification and not on if the person is a quality instructor. Sometimes with large moneymaking organizations one is not certified because he chooses to leave the organization out of disgust on how it is run, some do not like jumping through the hoops and forking over thousands for a sheet of fake parchment, and some just do not play politics...

but for the most part not having a blessing to teach is somewhat indicative of not being qualified in the eyes of the teacher...

I guess if one is totally new and never been exposed to a style he won't know what to look for in terms of if the instructor is "good" or not. However if what he teaches is useful in a martial sense it doesn't matter too much if it deviates from a "set" standard of doing things.

With traditional arts minor asthetic details often don't make much difference and common principles are what's the important thing. If the teacher only learned 96 forms in CLF for example does it really matter he didn't learn all 100 or that he didn't learn all four dozen weapons? It's all about H2H realistic applicability.

Problem with internal styles is that it's hard to judge that since you learn the forms for years before you even get to judge that level since you're usually not exposed to it until then

also if you are able to best your instructor within a very short period of time
    that should be a clue
can you imagine training BJJ for 1 year and then you started tapping blackbelts
    me neither
