nice, i was going to describe the second one in that video.

there's also the two neck cranks.

and transitioning to the crucifix from a sprawl.

Some of my instructor's hell strangle variations, both from crucifix/back and other positions:

I had some decent success last night, was able to obtain the crucifix fairly reliably, though I got my guard passed while trying to find a way to transition to it from guard (Lols). Sometimes people wouldn't grab my foot, so I wedged it in and forced the issue. I lost a RNC and a hell strangle from there due to bad positioning and insane size difference respectively, reverse omo worked ok, but I screwed it up and let the guys arm free. Kimura worked great as usual.
I felt more secure and like I had more options than when I just had the back with hooks. Was also easier to get than the hooks. More fun tomorrow.

did you try to get your arm under their chin before letting go of the opposite arm?

The only way I know of is to armdrag his arm between your legs as he attempts to come around your side with a matador style pass. The armdrag is one of my best techniques and I've never gotten it to work. Not that I'm persuing it actively.

Trawling through youtube, I came across a couple of videos on the crucifix from side control which were new to me. I'm not really in love with this first one -- if you can get to the setup the armbar seems to be a gimme. But setting it up from a failed armbar, as in the second, might be more viable.

That second setup combos pretty damn well with some other things I've recently learned. Gonna try that tomorrow.

the subs 101 video has a small problem imo - there is a second where he's rolling into the position where the other guy can escape.

i'm definitely going to try out the triangle from armbar in the second vid. however, here i'm also suspicious that the opponent might smell the fresh air and twist for freedom during the transition.

just got told by a blackbelt that while i'm setting up the crucifix i should swap the arm trapped in my legs to the other leg... damn that's difficult to describe. i'll find some pics...

    so, at this point:

you should swap the arm to the other leg before doing anything else.

so when you end up here:

the arm should be pointing down instead of up. i think.

tonight i caught someone in a crucifix and did this, it worked fine. can't say i have enough personal experience with it to say which is better. but i'm going to stick with the way i was told for now.
