Yeah and the guy got beat over the head by a suburi-to, thus killing him.

@ Simio de las xmas: You are right about how dangerous it is to train the sword. I remember reading an article about sword training and it was saying that traing with a real sword maybe cool but a sharpen sword needs to be treated with respect... obviously why.

But Obata sees it as impratical for both resheathing and cuttting because of lack of power, range and practicality. Often I demonstrate in class why its ineffectiveness against more typical strikes or options. So yeah, never used it and never used in that form of japanese swordsmanship.

    Where do you train?

For those who care, reverse grip is mentioned in some of Stephen K. Hayes' books, and maybe a few times in some of Hatsumi's stuff, as a means of carrying the sword behind your back while you move. It keeps it out of the line of sight, so if anyone chances upon you, they might not initially think you are armed, so you could surprise attack them..... but Hayes and Hatsumi have their own issues, so take from that what you will.

I've never seen it mentioned anywhere as a stance to use when you square off against someone in a fight so.... yeah.

But every once in a while you come across a swordsman who was famous for using awkward stances in combat, but those were usually to lure n00bish opponents into attacking an obviously exposed target... but these guys were significantly more experienced than everyone else so... keep that in mind too.

And combat is dangerous, be safe when training, and don't be stupid.

Considering the Ryu-ha Hatsumi teaches aren't listed in the Nihon Densho Bugei Ryuha or Bugei Ryuha Daijiten, I personally treat the claim that those arts are koryu with a liberal pinch of salt.

    But that's just me.
