    I'll add to that, we had Peter Boylan over for a seminar a few years ago, and he was telling us of his experiences in a japanese koryu dojo, they like to use shinken at higher grades. Anyway, when you first draw in iaido you snap the blade out, I know there is a word for it but I forgot, do it wrong and you cut the inside of the saya, do it wrong enough and one day it cuts through the saya, and then through your hand. It wasn't that uncommon.

    is there any other techniques that actually use the blade in a reverse grip fashion?
