Arturo Gatti: Badass of the Month August 2009

Not to distract from Gatti, but I'm curious--what was considered underhanded about the weight gain? He made weight at the weigh-ins and then rehydrated, right? I don't really follow boxing, but I always thought boxers cut weight just like wrestlers or MMA fighters.

There was an extended period between the weigh in and the fight. He is alleged to have gained 19 pounds (going up a weight class) before the fight, thus not meeting the (I think) 141 class limit.

I hadn't seen Gatti fight before but this made me go watch some clips of his fights and wow that guy could take a beating and keep going. Hurt just looking at it, badass indeed!

From an MMA perspective I'm still failing to see the problem.

Boxing is not MMA. Take a look at the weight classes and notice how few Pounds (lbs) distinguish between them. To gain almost a Stone and Half is pretty much exceptional for that Contracted weight division and so gave Arturo a terrific advantage particularly as he was a noted Puncher - and the proved it in the fight. Hence the scrutiny and suspicion of foul play.

My understanding though is that they're all cutting in boxing too. Like it or not cutting is a skill and some guys do it better than others. Guys are contracted to make a certain weight and if they don't there are then penalties. Their weight obligation is contractually at the scale.
