mhm, wrong section. and i'm sure you could find a 100 page thread on this somewhere if you did a search as well.
do you actually train any grappling in the first place or are you learning off youtube videos with your mates?
to answer the question:
the reason you'd use one or the other has nothing to do with the fact that it's MMA, BJJ, judo, sambo or whatever. as pointy said, it's a matter of position - where you started in the first place. you're just choosing the best technique for the situation.
the first one can be easier to escape however, and i'll often do something like grab the nearest leg for better control. -
