that coleman/smith fight was fascinating to watch.

they really didn't have any kind of submission game at all. Its odd seeing coleman not get hooks/rnc and smith taking coleman's back and then letting him up. even ground and pound, coleman just looked awkward and ugly and he was the champ. The fighters were just making stuff up as they went along.

it really makes you appreciate how well develped and technical the game has become.

    and the headbutts, awesome.

the gracies may be douches by and large but you can't argue that the world has better fighters now because of them.

Smith had a basic submissions game from his time in Pancrase. I think he attempts a Kimura at one point. He stands back up because he was a n00b grappler and a world class striker, while Mark was an Olympic level wrestler.

That fight was the dawn of effective striking in the UFC, and Mo's prior victory over Conan in Battlecade was a major blow against BJJ's patina of invincibility.

Well, at first, how to avoid the triangle and the armbar. We were working to defeat Royce.

Once it became clear they moved him out of the superfight we changed it a bit. Dan did NOT need much; he just needed to know how to finish. We worked on knees from on top; head butting on top; some Lebell stuff, and the CVR (which he used on Joe Charles and is now called a "Severn") and the Ude Garami when the guy tried to prevent the head butts.

It seemed to have worked well for him that night.... but the credit is all his.

I submit what we are seeing now with Mr. Lesner would have been even more intense if the huge Dan Severn crushed the little Royce Gracie.

Can you describe the technical aspects of a cardiovascular restraint (CVR/Severn) as opposed to a BJJ RNC?

Damn. Severn was almost as big as Lesnar at that point.
