I would be concerned about hand injuries. If you don't plan to make your life boxing, be careful with your hands.

If you are doing this recreationally I wouldn't worry too much about brain damage.

Parkinson's shouldn't have anything to do with that. It's a genetic degenerative disease.

However other nasty things can result from constantly being hit in the head. Wear headgear and mouthguard. Mouthguards help prevent concussions too. If you get a custom one done, make sure it opens your jaw enough that the base of it won't slam into your skull. Some custom ones just protect the teeth alone. Air gaps are also good to allow better breathing through the mouth b/c with upper guards, you have to clench for them to work. None custom good stuff would be Wipss Brainpads. They even make ones specifically for boxing (the black or gold colored ones).

Leon Spinks lives in subsized housing in my area. He's fucked up just like Ali...just without the pronounced shaking. He's a mush-mouth, trembling wreck of a man. Hadda friend who waited tables at the Denny's he'd frequent.

The only two top-level boxers I've seen who don't at least slur their words are Tyson and Lewis. Tyson was just fucked up before he started getting hit in the brain.

    Correct.

As far as pros though....keep an eye on Art Gatti and Micky Ward (Gatti/Ward I, II, and III!!) those guys are going to be hurting in a few years. Great fights but they probably left grey matter on the ring floor.

In case if you are like me, you don't have to worry a thing about boxing and feel free to block every punches with your head. What is the point in worrying about perfect speech if you are deaf? :-)

Actually as an Amatuer I would worry about Brain injuries bit. Why? Because most newb amatuer boxers are pure HEADHUNTERS. And if your defense is weak and the ref sucks you may end up with a concussion, even with the headgear. I seen it done were the ref hangs back and doesn't break the action because the guy is putting up some defense. Next thing you know LIGHTS OUT and punches are still being thrown. It an extreme case but it happens. Just pray your ref is competent.
