so, you couldn't use an antena ripped off from a car as a fenciing sword?

Trust me, I've been stabbed by an antena ripped off a tv, didn't take much and left a nice scar in my hand.

rubber band and bent paper clip = projectile!

(wrap the rubber band between two fingers and hook the bent paper clip over it, pull back and let it fly)

.. this may do nothing to stop an attacker but it can sting that poor kid across the room that wore shorts to class! It can also make a large clanging noise if you hit the desk so watch it. Use staples for stealth mode.

An antenna? I'd use the whippy-ness of it over the point. So in that way, it'd be more like sabre-fencing (what I did) then foil or epee. No grip or handle, I wouldn't risk a stab, personally. But that's about the only reasonable comparison I've ever seen in real life.

My favorites are the Bo staff and escrima stick as far as adaptability goes. (personally I carry an ASP extendable baton with me).
I'm also a huge fan of the kubaton keychain. So much so that I got my instructors certification and teach seminars on a regular basis.

JKDchick- the only thing that compares to a sword that you might be attacked with is a machete. An axe is pretty bad to be attack with too not to mention a baseball bat.

Yeah, but machete/sword really not that much of a difference. I'm talking in the improvised weapons category.

Sorry if I'm misinformed, but aren't escrima/kali sticks based off of sword? I mean, the whole art is based off of sword and dagger, as brought there by the spanish, correct? So that stick work is actually sword work.

Frankly, most of the techniques I've seen used in sword are in stick fighting, whereas stick fighting does not have a few sword techniques, mostly stabs and slashes, although a jab with a stick wouldn't be very pleasant.

Not dissing stick fighting at all, but in the non-fencing world, sword has all the same moves as stick(minus restraints, which are mostly useful for law enforcement and not self defense, where you probably have no back up to watch your back while you restrain someone).

Choking someone with those sticks gives a higher chance of crushing their windpipe, better off using your arm. Unless you're trying to kill them of course.

It's probably more accurate to say that stick-fighting replaced sword-fighting in the Filipino arts.

I'd have to say, and I say this as a sport fencer in sabre and epee, that the Kali I do is very different in form and function, different in body motion, different in strikes. When the weapon has no edge or point, it really does bring out different skills and actions.
