    7/11/09 - Reilly Bodycomb Matches

    Congrats to my student Reilly Bodycomb who won the Ultimate Sambo Grappling Challenge 2

    I am particularly happy because he is changing his game to move away from leg locks. The second match really shows how hard he has been working on other game plans...

    Great work as always from him.

    Glad to hear he is moving into broader fields of grappling. I saw shades of Marcelo in his armdrag to back in round 2.

    Hopefully between that and weight cutting he'll make an impression at the next ADCC!

    Actually, ADCC added a new weight division for next year, so it will be much better..not so huge a span in weight.

    Awesome. If you don't mind sharing, is Reilly planning on focusing more on upper-body submissions like armbars too, or is it more of getting takedown points and working for his leg locks from top instead of bottom?

    I really appreciate his and your instructionals, by the way. They've added new layers to my takedown and leglock games.

    We are working on lots of other things...aside from leg locks. You can see he flowed very nicely from back control (RNC attempt), to armbar attempt, to the final leg lock he got in match 2. We are not just doing "this or that" new thing, we are simply working on expanding his game with increased attention to all areas...takedowns, top half subs, flow, etc. All part of the process. It is not that he is poor in those areas by any means. For Reilly, it has honestly been about being better at legs than most competitors and simply doing what would get a win. But, the challenge now, because he is more known, is to evolve his game so he is not so predictable and is intentionally more versitile on the mat.

    Wow...those were some of the slickest leg locks I've seen outside of professional bouts. He grabbed an ankle from every position! My bad knees cringed all the way from California.

    How long has Reilly been training with you?

    Just under 4 years. No significant grappling prior to that.

    Wow, Steve.

    I really love the way he applies that arm-drag takedown.

    And was that a heel-hook attempt that twists the opposite direction I saw in the second match?

    Beautiful.
    Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
    and remember what peace there may be in silence.
    As far as possible, without surrender,
    be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
    and listen to others,
    even to the dull and ignorant;
    they too have their story.

    -excerpt of the poem called "Desiderata," by Max Ehrman, 1927.
