He did pro wrestling for a long time so he learned some submission stuff from that, but I guess Takada dojo hired some BJJ guy (Rey Diogo?) to train their fighters. So he does have some BJJ training. Mostly, I think he's a natural.

Sak's strategy was to be admired that night. Really thinking out of the box.
Neither one of them should feel ashamed.

Royler is really flexible and I was under the impression that it didn't really hurt. It didn't look like Sak could tear his shoulder because I'm sure If it was possible he would have.
Sak was trained in BJJ by Ricardo Pires and a few others. DSE (parent company of Pride) payed for a bunch of world class trainers to come over and teach Matsui, Sak and a few others from Takada Dojo MMA prior to Pride 1.
And he used to do Pro Wrestling.

judging by the grimace on Royler's face, I'd say it hurt.

It sure as hell looked like he could have torn the shoulder to me.

I would have loved to see Royler the next day having a beer with Sak. I wonder how sorry for himself he would feel comparing how banged up he and Sak were :D

I wonder what makes Sak so great at dealing with Gracies. How does he always manage to get them off of him when they try to grapple him. Btw what style of grappling does Sak use. Sorry im not a big Pride watcher.

The rules stated that the referee couldn't intervene. Royler didn't tap so it should have been a draw. Royler has tapped in competition before, to Mario Sperry in 1998 and recently to Eddie Bravo. If Royler genuinely thought he was in danger then he would have tapped. It was his decision to make - not the referee's.
The Japanese are notorious cheats - twice they've intervened in fights with Gracie's to give the win to the Japanese fighter when the rules of the contest specifically said that the referee could not interfere. Once with Royler and Sak, the other with Royce and Yocheater. Another time when Randy Couture fought they restarted the match after it had half fallen out of the ring with Couture in the submission that was nowhere near on when the fighters had spilled out of the ring.

the fight wouldn't have been a draw though in this case.
Royler was stuck, Sak had him. If the ref didn't stop it Sak
just would have kept applying more pressure.
I've seen the fight a few times but I don't know much background info.
Has Royler ever claimed he could have/would have gotten out ?
