    52 Blocks in the NY Times

    There's an article and accompanying video on the 52 Blocks in the NY Times this morning.

    For a long time it has been a kind of martial arts Loch Ness monster: an American fighting form with supposedly sinister origins that many have heard of but few have seen or experienced.
    The reporter interviewed Lyte Burly, Daniel Marks, Kawaun Adon Akhenaten7 and Rashad Evans for the piece.
    “Most people do not do, but take refuge in theory and talk, thinking that they will become good in this way” -- Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, II.4

    I think the official name for this system should be "Kali <comma> going back to"

    And that really is the proper reaction. Fucking rag.
    Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
    and remember what peace there may be in silence.
    As far as possible, without surrender,
    be on good terms with all persons.
    Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
    and listen to others,
    even to the dull and ignorant;
    they too have their story.

    -excerpt of the poem called "Desiderata," by Max Ehrman, 1927.

    Thanks for the link.

    Interesting to see how different it looks, even between those two sets of practitioners. The indoor school looks a lot more stylized, with backfists and a peek-a-boo defense whereas the outdoor players were standing straighter and throwing longer punches.

    Good also to see a Newcastle United shirt in an unlikely place. The toon will be needing some 52 when they visit places like Doncaster, Peterborough and Scunthorpe next season.

    I strongly suspect that Kawaun Adon Akhenaten7 is the latest alias of the man who was called "Big K" in Doug Century's book "Street Kingdom".

    Good to see the 52s getting some more mainstream exposure.

    That's characteristic of the 52s in general; as a fighting style (or set of styles) it's very open to individual interpretation and improvisation.

    Cool. Would you like to tell us a bit about the training? How do you find the style, it's strengths, weaknesses, etc? Do you have training in any other martial arts?

    In a more light-hearted vein - are you about to introduce 52 to the terraces of St. James' Park?

    Cheers
