    As of 06/29/2009 on Martialtalk,

"I kinda know what you feel. I am a 2nd dan in judo. I will be eligible for 3rd dan soon. I am approved now, I just don't have the points needed. However, as an instructor I know I should continue going up so my students can do so as well.

I haven't made a priority of ranking in hapkido or tae kwon do because I have put a lot of effort into judo. I still want my tae kwon do bb more because I want that to be something I finished and not the one thing I let get away and didn't finish"

Can someone explain how you can be approved for your next Dan ranking, but not have sufficient points to be awarded it?

Well, if he is speaking about SAP points, he could pass the test but still not be promoted until he has enough points.

However, I think him getting 3rd dan might be harder than he thinks....

I believe, from what the Judo experts here have mentioned, is that the Judo orgs require you to have a certain number of competition points for your Dan levels. If you are not competing actively, I think there is some other criteria as well. Mr Tripp, Coach Josh, and the like know more surrounding that. I'm sure they will provide something more definitive.

This may explain the whole sorry episode. Dad gives him rank he doesn't deserve and he feels subconsciously inadequate. He seeks rank outside his dad's art, but can stop the initial bad habit of taking rank he is not entitled to.

Good work BTW. Can you post the info in the main thread?
His dad never 'gave' matt any rank, if anything matt would never be as far as he is if he wanted rank from his dad. He had to go to another Moo Sul Kwan school to get that. I read almost this whole post and you've guys have down great and have cleared up a lot of stuff others in the organization was wondering about but his dad didn't give matt anything. If anything all of this probably came about Matt trying to live up to his dad.

Why is Matt wearing a 2nd dan belt in Hapkido in the picture?

Is that his groups GM that is with him?

If you don't know that's cool, I tried to contact the dojang and ask because if Matt is a 2nd Dan then I'm just wondering why he claims something lower.

The text reads "Mul Soo Kwan Institute, Lee H. Park" and the forward facing text (see #28) says "Matt M. Morton, 2nd Dan"

Matt didn't get his judo certifitcation through Moo Sul Kwan. He's wearing that 2nd dan for his judo rank. That is the way MSK presents its TKD and HKD rank and I guess matt just followed through. That is not his judo teacher that is Grandmaster Shin. He has a school in St. Louis and is almost like a sister school to us. He and Grandmaster Park (who was the founder of Moo Sul Kwan in the US) were best friends. So I'm sure he does answer questions about Judo for Matt. We don't normally answer questions about Matt (we've had a few) but I couldn't let the comment about his dad pass, although I know it was made in context.
