I've witnessed how those stories can go horribly wrong.
I've got this friend whose a former green baret and done 5 years in the legion, just a nice guy but a bit cuckoo.

so on time we're hanging out and he overhears this guy yapping about how he was a green baret.
he walked over to him, asked him some specific questions and then gave him an assbeating the imposter will not likely forget anytime soon.
i didnt interfere with that karma in action.

years ago there was this guy who was a purple/pink baret (i **** you not, he said that) and he was a veteran from a secret himalayan war.

pinkbarets in the snow...probably a lot of casualties...LOL

I didn't want to ruin your guys work by having him clam up.

Notice, he never says I rescued the guy.

His unit, He was on the ship that had the shot up helicopter, He survived a helicopter crash.

None of these statements directly involve him in the actual operation. He even separates his helicopter crash from Operation Purple Star.

Except that he does claim that one of the people in the picture, underneath the front blade of the helo, is him. As there are only about 20 or so grunts in that photo (hint all the guys in front are in flight suits and are either pilots or crewmen on the helos), he would seem to be claiming more that just being on board.

That's like the Super Secret Himalayan Purple/Pink belt. Don't knock it. These guys are super sensitive about their pink berets/belts.

On a more serious note, did anybody run his name through official military records check? I don't recall the exact site, but there is one dedicated to ousting fraudulent military service claims. once your name is up there, it's there forever.

I think http://www.archives.gov/veterans/mil...e-records.html might be a good start.

Wow. That is positively Clintonesque. I suppose there is an interpretation of the following quote where he does not actually claim direct involvement in the rescue, but it is a highly tortured one.

His question "Did you go into the Atlantic and pull dead people out?" has the direct implication that he did do it, in all but the most technical of senses.

Is he lying? Depends on what your definition of "is" is.

Are you referring to POW Network? They are an excellent resource.

If Matt Morton told me the sky was blue, I'd look up just to make sure.

"Ah, but you forgot about the time difference! I only meant that the sky was blue somewhere. You bastards just won't ever be satisfied, even though I've been proven right time and time again. You'll never know what it was to get your honor in the Atlantic, or to be carried to church in a basket by your 6th degree father because your knees were given in the service of your ungreatful country and you v=have nothing to show for it but Haldol !!!!"
