Matt, i do honestly appreciate you driving 35 miles one way to get to my office yesterday.
I also appreciate your candor over the phone and in person. I'm vouching for your usmc service and judo creds.

However, this kind of forgery can be criminal and the gracies will be pissed. I want you to have your name cleared of forgery.

Now, the only way to fully clear you of forgery is to nail down who did it.

So maybe, everybody can stop talking about judo and the usmc and we can sort out the forged bb certs issue.

If it's still necessary I can check Matt's credentials out easily.
Asriel, can you ask Roger (or Nic) if there is a link to an image of one of Roger's cert forms, or better yet, to Nic's cert itself? I would like to take a closer look at a legit Roger BB cert.

    Eric: Friend helping a friend.
    Me: Ok, that's cool.
Eric: I can certify you for BJJ as well.
    Me: Ok, how.
Eric: I am certified, you were a good friend on active duty.
    Me: Ok, thanks man.

    That is the gist.
    Matt,

I would like to understand your thought process, based on that conversation, around why you would accept a certification like that.

I hate to sound harsh (or beat a dead horse), but c'mon. If anyone offered me something like that I would either decline it, or take it and put it in a drawer somewhere. I would never in a million years pay for it or make any reference to it anywhere if I never earned it.

I think we all respect your military service and Judo rank, but a little explanation as to why you would accept something like this would go a long way towards clearing things up.

Factual clarification: there is precedent for going directly to as high as brown belt in bjj if you are a skilled groundwork guy from a related field. Ishii, the judo gold medalist, received a brown after a few clases.

Just brought up for the sake of clarity. As far as I know of, there has never been a straight to black belt instance, partly because black belt signifies mastery in bjj rather than proficiency as it does in judo.

*sigh* this is not helping your claim Matt.

Shall we try again with Garcia?

Note the part about actually training with a BB instructor and allowing him to take stock of your ability. Dave Camarillo was promoted to blue "after a few classes" to for the same reason.

Matt, did you have at least "a few classes" with Garcia? When was this? Do you feel your Ne Waza is BJJ BB level?

I need to know three things about that email address.
    1. Are you ABSOLUTELY ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CERTAIN that you typed the address correctly?
    2. When was the last date that you received an email from that email address?
    3. Can you forward one of the emails to me so that I can check the headers?

Email is jswentworth at gmail dot com.

BINGO! that is the best policy. I have noticed that when I walk into a lot of schools, the teacher often enough seems to have a lot of these ranks hanging up. honorary rank is a big fat can of worms... In Feudal Japan some guys could recieve Menkyo in a day, thats just not the case now a days. It is best to do what Jeff did.

If you want to say you trained what is wrong with "Yeah I trained with Paul Vunik (for example) for two weekends on filipino biting" or list the hours.. If everyone did that the workd would be a better place. Unfortunately.... and this is one of the problems ahem! Matt.... people are often lured by the promise of a cert. Thats not kosher.

For thos who missed it, this is what Morton initially said about the BJJ certs and his attitude towards them:

I haven't seen either man since I was active duty. The only thing I can say for sure is that I haven't heard from Eric since the first week of March of this year. I have not had any correspondence with Mike since 1996.

FWIW: I don't have any correspondence from Eric saved.
