    Hell yeah! Hell no!

Is MMA fighting the end of the world as we know it?

While searching for updates on the situation in Iran, I stumbled on this:

    http://onmilwaukee.com/sports/articles/begel060909.html

In which onmilwaukee.com sports writer Dave Begel asks "Is MMA fighting the end of the world as we know it?"

What follows is an exact replica of the sort of pretentous, ignorant, narrow-minded windbaggery that blew from one end of this great nation to the other in 1996-97. For those of you who were not paying attention, this was the moment when the powers that be aligned to crush, first Battlecade, then all of NHB. The sport continues to be defined by that traumatic loss of innocence, even if many of its fans were not involved at the time. If you ever wondered what the mainstream sounds like when it rears its pompous head and threatens all you hold dear in the name of sanity and decency, it sounds like this:

We can say that Tiger Woods killed Phil Mickelson in that match. But in MMA, we are very close to the truth when we use the word "kill." I don't know if you've ever seen this thing, but it's unbelievably violent and destructive. They have judges, but they hardly ever decide a match. Matches almost always end with a knockout or a submission.
This thing is proving to be very popular among men between the ages of 18 and 49. That doesn't give me much confidence in our future. This sport was an obvious outgrowth of the chaos and relative civility of boxing. And I'm worried that the logical outgrowth from MMA is to put a fighter in a ring with a lion, a tiger or a pit viper.
Somebody in Wisconsin ought to get on the train and take steps to outlaw this abomination. We are one of the few states in this country that outlaws capital punishment. Let's lead the way on this one, too.
One wonders what sort of rock Dave was hiding under when this sort of drivel appeared on front pages on papers like the NYT and USA Today. Remember folks, we're not out of the entirely woods yet.

The "Talkbacks" on the linked page are worth reading

MMA an outgrowth of boxing? The man has obviously done his research on the Gracie family and the Brazillian Boxing style.

The amazing thing is that he just discovered MMA this month, jumped over to the wiki article, stole their MMA pic, and just started writing. I am amazed a sports guy managed to miss it all these years. He's like a guy from 1996 who just woke up from a coma, and is saying exactly the same thing sports writers said 13 years ago.

    It's almost sad.

I'm not a huge UFC fan, I train Judo, I train BJJ I have a huge amount of respect for the athleticism of the fighters but I don't consider myself a fan. However, I've gladly defended the sport against family and friends who spout very similar opinions. If the writer of that drivel were to post the same article yet target boxing it would never have made it past copy edit... just sad.
I do not aspire to be great, or even good, I hope to suck a little less then last class.

I'm pretty shocked he'd never heard of MMA before...

Also, he says judges hardly ever call a fight. I wonder what percentage of fights go to decision?

According to fightmetric, about 23% of fights that they've looked at do.

*sigh* so of course this article comes out of my hometown. First things first, screw that old windbag. OnMilwaukee is geared towards tourists so in other words it wants to make Milwaukee look good to visitors, and nothing says goody goody like bashing “human cock fighting”. Never seen mma till now? Yeah right, what he’s been living in a hole these pass I don’t know five years? Wisconsin has a fairly active mma scene http://wicombatsports.com/ and to think a sports writer has never seen it until now is unbelievable to me. I wish he had mentioned the channel he saw this gladiator match on, my guess it was Versus in which case he’s right because that’s how they market their fights.

YouTube - WEC - World Extreme Cagefighting - "Doesn't Matter"

Anyway just so Milwaukee doesn’t get a bad rep here’s a fairly recent article in our daily paper about a local mma fighter. Notice how completely different the writing styles are.

In the interest of clarity for younger members and late adopters, everybody knew about the UFC in the "blood and guts" days. Everybody. Fewer people liked it than do now, but it had a much bigger news profile back then than it does even today. Don't confuse the post-ban dark ages with the pre-ban explosion.

In summary, he must have been living in a hole for 15+ years.
