Mad Malk, are you saying "rugged" or "Ruger?"
My kid fell in love with the P22 in Tennessee, so I've been looking, too. I heard I should be able to get them in the $200-$300 range, but I haven't really looked locally yet. I'm in no hurry and don't figure to pay a transfer fee unless I have to.
I own a Ruger MkI with a 5.5" bull barrel. My impression of the P22 is that it has several advantages over the MkI/II/III series:
1. P22 magazines are the same capacity as my MkI magazines, but they seem much more robust. The Ruger magazines are infamous for causing feeding problems; the lips are delicate and oscillate between too loose and too tight. The P22 feed lips seem much stronger and more solidly designed.
2. Feeding seems more positive.
3. Magazine release is awkward for me, but not as awkward as the heel latch on my Ruger (although, if you get the 22/45 model, you'll have a "standard" American style mag release button behind the trigger guard.) The P22 has a "paddle" style that's ambidextrous but hard for me to remember.
4. I know I say this every time, but check it in your hands before you buy. The P22 is ridiculously small, whereas the Ruger fills my bear paws nicely. My kids love the P22 grip, but I do think it would be pretty small for me over the long term. -

My Ruger is the MkII with the 5.5 Bull. Love it, and will never sell it. My first pistol, actually. My dad bought it for me when I was in 7th grade. Second pistol was a Colt that I sold a few months ago.
