Atencio: 'If He Says I'm A Loser, Then I Must Be A Loser"

    http://www.fighthype.com/pages/content4977.html

PC: I'm sure you've read Dana White's response to your comments. What's your response to his response?

Atencio: If he says I'm a loser, then I must be a loser!

PC: The thing that's funny to me that I think validates your comments is if I was watching that E:60 and I had never watched MMA before, I would have sworn they were interviewing a fighter. Maybe that's not Dana's fault, but that's how it appears.

Atencio: Right! And that's just it. If you're going to act and look so tough and bully people around, then when somebody calls you out, then step up. Be what you act and don't be a façade. And that's my point. Do I think I'm tough? No, not at all. Do I act tough? I hope not. Do I get in the ring? Even if I win, that doesn't make me tough, but it shows that at least I can step in there and I can back up what I say. It's just time for someone to step up to the bully and say, "That's enough; I'm done!"

As much as I love Dana, he's losing the PR war on this one.

Well not really. A lot more people know White than Atencio. And fans of the sport have pretty much made up their minds on Dana either way.

He established the precedent of challenge fights involving MMA executives and is now backing down from it. Had he never been involved in the thing with Tito, he'd have a better leg to stand on with regards to blowing off Atencio.

I think his leg is just fine enough to stand on.

"antencio is too unimportant to fight, and all i'd be doing is giving his promotion company a lot of free publicity" is pretty much his claim.

And it's true. Him not accepting it will get Antencio much les attention than him accepting the fight (regardless of who wins the fight).

That said, I still think Dana is losing the PR war. It's just the the PR war is only being waged in front of a very small amount of people.

Well given the sport's history I would never underestimate the effect of the Internet fans on it. They (we?) were the only thing keeping it alive during the McCain blackout.

I guess that's true. Plus i'm sure it's even more common these days.

Still though, I think the amount of people who care are still small in comparison to the amount of people who'd care if they were fighting.

As it is, it's just two people childishly trash talking, which is pretty much a mainstay of Dana's acitivity.

(actually, i don't even think Antencio is childishly trash talking here)

If Dana had something to gain, he would likely go for it. I just don't see where any benefit exists for the UFC or Dana for accepting pointless challenges. To promote something like this and the cost and time it would take to set everthing up would have to provide some signifcant reward.
