If its a straight exchange, with no leverage, you will get a few cents on the dollar. but like any instrument you have to be savvy enough to be on the right side of the trade.

the problem with foreign CDs is that any gains can be wiped out by sudden declines in that currency. US CD are much less risky. for example, if you would have bought a British CD while the Pound was at 2.04 in aug 08 you would have tanked into negative territory by Jan when the collapse came and hit 1.27 b y Jan 09. Now its at 1.62-66 range.

Yeah the violatility is why I don't mess with currency trading. Also it is tough because obviously you buy at the top (the british pound) there is no place to go, but catching a falling knife... that is what has prevented me from buying a particular Certificate of Deposit. Australia has good resources and seems stabile enough to try it with... but this is not trading its just buying in the currency.

So the dollar is still the most stabile currency in the world? I am tempted to try a northern euro CD if it is still down... but the bad thing is that I can't trade out without penalties if I do it through the CD's! It might almost be better just to buy it at Forex or something so it can be transferred easily. This is the closest I get to gambling unless I am in Las Vegas haha.

Stable isn't the word. The US dollar is considered "quality". When markets become more risk averse, slumping economy, etc., there tends to be a flight to quality in the dollar. More buying means higher dollar value. When things get better, people's risk appetite increases and see more selling of the dollar for other currencies. Euro, GBP, Aud, etc etc.

Right now we are at a mid range from peak to trough in price. foreign money has been trending higher due to the US rally since march. but the US rally is going sideways now. iffy at best.
