Personally, I'm a *****, so am keen to start off with some pretty hefty protection. At least in the early stages. (Also, will mostly be doing it with fellow students, without instructor supervision). Is the WEKAF stuff the best route for that?

Cost wise, I can get armour, helmet and gloves for about 100 total.
I started out with just the fencing mask, gloves, cup and shin guards, so I don't know too much about the WEKAF style gear. My instructor has a bunch of it though and having checked it out, I think it's an okay way to go if you don't like welts and stuff but still want to use some power. He was telling me there's a tournament coming up, so I may get a chance to do some WEKAF sparring/competing. The cost sounds like a good deal and you should take it. Even if you don't end up using it for sparring all the time, it'll always be good for certain kinds of drilling and gloves are always an essential in weapon sparring (IMO).

Just like using very padded light weapons, the WEKAF style gear tends to have fellows thinking they can just run in and absorb whatever hits may come. They lose respect for the stick and what it can do. We found with heavier taped padded, or slim sticks, people are not as eager to eat those extra rib and thigh shots. It adds an element (still very far from FULL contact) of reality to the situation.

Here is Tuhon Gaje and a head shaking Dan Inosanto "officiating" Greg Alland vs I'm not sure, in a full contact fight in 1986:

Cool video! Looked like one kendo headgear and one 3 weapon fencing mask.

So, I've picked up a pair of WEKAF style gloves (arrived today).
They look very strong, and I'm pretty sure they could withstand a close-range tank round. I'd go so far as to say they're so awesome I probably don't need a helmet. The gloves will frighten stick attacks away from my whole body.

The only thing I can't do is bend my fingers. :gay:

Any suggestions for how I can soften gloves up a bit without damaging them?

(They'd be great for the fat padded sticks, but the main reason for buying gloves at this stage is to go through the paired drills a lot harder and faster with real sticks, without having to lose work through broken fingers.)

I like to use a sjambok to work in new gear/clothing. I hang whatever it is from my heavy bag chain and whack the hell out of it.

It's a kind of African whip, and it's the main use I have for mine.

The very thought of that is hardening my equipment rather than softening it.

In seriousness, just giving the kit a pounding will loosen it up then? It's leather, so I guess it sounds right.

Again though, that is one groovy whip.

If they're sparring gloves, it probably couldn't hurt. For gloves especially though, you should wear them and do some hard stickwork with them so they start to fit your hands better. I recommend using a hanging tire and doing some double stick strikes with good power.

We use goggles, lacrosse gloves, shinpads, & a cup. That's it.

I hear lacrosse gloves are superior to hockey gloves for stickfighting because they allow a better range of motion.

Yeah, hockey gloves are too bulky for my taste.
