I offered to hit you with one. The offer still stands.

While I would say that it's unlikely that you could do serious damage (broken bones, joint damage, etc.) with the ATF sticks, they hurt enough to provide a healthy desire not to be hit with them.

Tha's one of my concerns with padded sticks, all the ones i've tried have plastic cores and bend to much to be practical.

Agreed. Rattan core is the way to go.

Does your teacher still teach krabi ? I met Salty in '07 at my first gathering; real nice guy and down to earth. On a side note why don't you guys go ghetto and use pvc wrapped in insulating foam along with a healthy dose of duct tape. When I first started we use to smack the **** out each other with these. Its cheap and stings bad enough so you get the message.

Yeah, he holds a weekly group on saturday(when i'm working- which means my dumb schedule this quarter is keeping me from doing ARMA and Krabi......that's a lot of time I could be hitting people with sticks!)

Thanks for all the repiles. I think I've got a good idea about how to get started doing some real sparring.

I asked this already somewhere else around here and haven't hear any replies so here goes. How does kendo head gear hold up againt full contact sparring? I'm concerned the face cage might bend or break and poke my eyes out...but at least I could wear a cool i patch!

Thought I had posted this already, but I guess it was in another thread. Kendo helments are built to protect against a shinai, so your head will be well protected in terms of concussive force. As for the grill, if you've already got the helmet, check to see if you can fit a stick between the bars. You're probably safe though. If you don't already have one, I'd go with a WEKAF helmet since they cost about the same.

There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you. I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain. I will use my mistakes against you. There's no other choice.

Kendo helmets work to protect against shinai as wielded by kendoka, which means with control. They will not work well with full force contact with follow-through. They will not work well against solid rattan or wood. They do not protect the back of the head at all, and if your posture is incorrect even shots to the top will wrap around and hurt. Hard shots to the ears may well cause permanent hearing damage.

The grills on the other hand are solid. The titanium ones are tougher than the duraluminum ones.

If you still wanted to use them for stick work, I would buy slightliy over-sized and add closed-cell foam padding.

True. Plenty of time later to hit and get hit.
