Well I tried out the Kendo gloves w/ a little solo striking and they suck, there is no wrist flexibility which is very uncomfortable. The palm of the golves is more covered than I remembered and the padding dosen't make for a comfortable grip. Nix the kendo gloves.

How do these look I found them on ebay for $15, The palm is more open and there's a little forearm/wrist protection. You'd still definately want to avoid a srtike with these but at least they'd save a little stick on bone trauma.

What size is the grid on the mask you have? Will it stop the end of a 3/4 stick?
There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you. I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain. I will use my mistakes against you. There's no other choice.

i would avoid them. i used gloves with no thumb protection once, and couldn't write for days.

I would have to measure to be sure, but I think a thrust with a stick could probably slip through the grid. I doubt an angled strike would slip through though.

I didn't think thumb protection would be a big deal, but I'll take your word for it. How about wirst/forearm protection is it a good idea?

One of the problems I have seen with people wearing forearm protection is that they start to rely on it to block, which is fine when you're all padded up but not so fine if you don't have any padding. I don't like the idea of getting in the habit of blocking a stick with my forearm.

that's what i thought too. but think about it- you deliver angle 1, he counters with angle 1 to the hand. that strike's going right to your thumb and index finger.

wrist is good, but i think forearm protection is unnecessary, for the reasons escrimador6 stated.

I've got a student or two who specialize in throwing a strike that sorta "shaves" down your stick and whacks you right on the thumb.

I would only use forearm protection while someone it getting used to sparring with sticks for a bit, or if you spar with aluminum sword trainers. Possibly in an isolation drill of a skill that involves repetitive hits to the forearm(like the contradas).

This is actually a categorized technique in Lightning Scientific Arnis. We actually have a drill to work this specifically. It can be a very effective disarm at largo.
