    Short History of SAMBO Wrestling

I found a beautifully-done SAMBO documentary...unfortunately in Russian, as SAMBOka (?!) are wont to do. I hope that by bringing you this luscious footage, I will gain some edification on what is in it.

What I love is that it not only shows some great historical footage, and beautiful throws (check out the slow-motion at 5:36 in part 1!), and combat SAMBO (demo at 2:00 in part 2) but it also showcases several of the more local wrestling traditions that influenced SAMBO (see 1:30, 2:50, and others in part 1). Don't miss the old-timey demo at 4:08 (part 1) or Fedor competing at 7:44 (part 2). And can anybody explain the hopping at 1:22 please?

They even talk about Spiridinov and other figures that shaped the creation. Doesn't help me too much, since my Russian is limited to a pidgin form, developed to woo women. Ya vas lublu!

Any help translating would be delicious. I got a lot out of it even without language comprehension, but I'd love to know what or who they're talking about in the beginning of part 2, for instance. It appears to be a Japanese/Russian challenge tournament!

    Enjoy.

I'm having a friend help me out right now to get the major points of the video.

Great stuff. I knew Sambo drew from a lot of folk wrestling styles when it was created, I'd really love to learn more about the ones they showed.

I've tried looking for more information and failed. I know there's a SAMBO firefighter Bullie who posts here and knows Mongolian wrestling, but I wouldn't know where to start.

With my limited knowledge of wrestling styles, I think I saw some Turkish and Indian styles there too. How many historian members do we have?

Here's a thread on that topic I started awhile back, including videos of many of the styles mentioned in that documentary (and part of the doc itself).

The more I learn about Russia (thanks to Pavel books and a few sambo threads threads here ) the more I realize Russians kick ass.

Don't assume all Russians do Sambo. Sadly, I've learned this is not the case.

You are likely thinking about Aaron Fields...and yes..he would be a person to talk to about this.
