Forever Fat, Limited Edition: All Dogs Go To Heaven
There are dark times in every man's life; times when he doubts the fibers of his existence, when he looks within and finds nothing but an abyss. I similarly hit a dark spot in law school. The combination of stuffy old men, law books, and no sleep managed to suck out my soul (granted, choosing to be a lawyer meant there was very little to begin with).
But I paid my dues, time after time. I served my sentence, yet committed no crime.
Finally, I graduated law school and left that **** in the dust. I took the bar, and smashed it, and finally was able to train more than one day a week.
The gaping hole in my life started to be filled bit by bit. More training, more free time, more fun in general. I had more time too, and this gave me the opportunity to reflect on life, school, and bjj training.
Bad mistakes, I've made a few; I've had my share of sand kicked in my face, but I've come through
As I started a job in the legal world, I discovered that my presumption of infinite free time was totally incorrect. These people wanted me to work not only after 4 oclock (which, let's all face it, nothing productive gets done past 4 p.m.), but after 5! 5 oclock is a sacred time, a time of great slack! Also how the eff am I supposed to go to jiu jitsu working like that?!
it's been no bed of roses, no pleasure cruise
I started waking up early, working through lunch, doing whatever I could to make it to BJJ class. In fact, I managed to make it there earlier tonight.
I consider it a challenge before the whole human race, And I ain't gonna lose
I had a fun training session, and it felt good to roll around. At the end, my instructor asked one of our black belts to demonstrate a hip throw on me for the rest of the class (assuming, in the process, that I am capable at break falling).
Afterwards, he shows the class his variation on the hip throw. As I lay on the ground, he says,
"For those of you who don't know...
...it is traditional hazing in jiu jitsu...
...to throw someone who is going to get a promotion."
From inside his gi.
A black belt.
WEEEEEE ARE THE CHAAAAMPIONS, MY FRIIIIIIENDS
To my surprise, I'm a BJJ black belt. Friends, it's been ten long years since I started this journey. I've had my ups and downs. You've all read about them. Hell, as far as I'm concerned, you were all there (some of you actually were, now that I think about it). But somehow, I made it.
AND WEEEEEEEE'LLLLLLLLLL KEEEP ON FIIIIIGHTING, TILL THE ENNNNNNNNND
Is this the end for me? Like most cliche's, this really is just the beginning. I'll never quit jiu jitsu, I just can't. I'm a lifer. I'd like to tell you all I received the ability to shoot frogs out of my ass, or mastered the art of horizontal and vertical circle power, but I haven't. I feel like Mr. Bad Guy, just a normal old stupid, naive, jiu jitsu loving fool.
CAUSE WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS.....
And I guess that will never change.

I love you Mr Bad Guy! Your story has changed my life forever! (Okay, maybe not, but it's brought me many hours of entertainment.) Anyhow, big congratulations on your black belt! Huge accomplishment. But having seen your picture, I must say....you are a goofy lookin' dude. I say that knowing you could choke my ass out.

That is awesome. Congrats sir. I have had a blast reading your story over the years and earning my Shodan and now Nidan over the course of all these years. I, like yourself am about the journey and not about the cloth around my waist.

Wow! I guess from reading all of your story, I didn't realize you were even a brown belt! Huge congrats, it seems to have been, uhhh, one heck of a journey... To say the least!

Somehow I hope the next part of your story is getting screwed at a competition and having to compete in the brown belt division....
