You chose to train with an under-qualified instructor because it was your best option under the circumstances. Do you see any parallels between that situation and the one at 1point2's karate dojo?

No, because there are plenty of qualified BJJ places in philly.

That's what the thread tag reads. Although on second thought, you probably aren't there 1point2. Still, wherever you are, there has t be at least one legit BJJ place.

Matt McLaughlin, I think, is a local BJJ instructor across the river maybe 40 minutes each way. That's a stretch, but it's also besides the point. I could go myself (and I might), but it's simply irrational to say that I somehow have to stop teaching something that I and my predecessors have taught for several valid lineage-generations.

what do you teach first, the teabag kimura/armbar combo or the armbar from guard? Just curious.

Also, why do you have enough interest in Isshinryu to keep and preserve the name that you've been teaching for generations or whatever, but not enough confidence in it to not adulturate it with a huge body of outside technique?

You like the name and pajamas and the history, but when it's time to **** or get off the pot, you know isshinryu isn't enough?

As for the guy "40 minutes away" and not being able to bring in a guest instructor, that may apply to your students, but if you want to teach grappling, you need to get good at it first. If you're serious about teaching, you can make that drive or bring someone too your instructors. Even if you are training at a judo school or training at a BJJ school, you aren't ready to pass that **** on yet. The flaws you're imparting to your students are flaws they're going to have to pay someone to remove.
There's no choice but to confront you, to engage you, to erase you. I've gone to great lengths to expand my threshold of pain. I will use my mistakes against you. There's no other choice.

Oh, and you aren't "triangling all the browns" until you do it in a tournament.

I teach the jujigatame/armbar from ogoshi, first, then from mount versus a bench press.

As for the rest, you're getting a little ahead of yourself. I'm not qualified to open my own school in Isshinryu or anything else, let alone break off and declare my own style.

As for "adulterating" it, it's just the karate that I got from my teacher. Any changes that I decide to make are minor at this point, and furthermore, supported by Tatsuo's attitude of innovation. Karate is not meant to be a list of techniques and drills that stays everchanging throughout the generations.

Or did you think BJJ invented the concept of endless revolution in martial arts? We just did it shittier.

(Edit--as for triangling the browns, yours sounds like a fine criteria to me.)

Why does every crappler think their crappling is different? The farther you get in judo, the dumber you'll feel for showing people **** at this period in your own learning, I fucking guarantee it.

I feel like we're playing a game called "1.2 answers all the questions people pose, no matter how accusational, whereas all the questions he asks are ignored." It's OK, I guess, I just wish I knew how points were awarded.

Let me amend that. cyrilj answered questions, and now even though he might disapprove and we disagree, at least we're on the same page.
