    Join the NRA, For Free?

I came across this just a few minutes ago. Apparently the NRA is having a membership drive and their membership fee has been reduced to $0. That's pretty cool if you were considering joining anyway.

Yeah, the NRA isn't exactly the best organization defending Second Amendment rights out there, but they've done some good work especially with the Heller decision.

Thanks for the link, Phrost. I joined up and it really was free. Truthfully, I've been meaning to do it for a while but never got around to it... this will give me a year and then I have no problem paying for membership after that.

    Thanks again.

****... I just signed up too, no fees, no asking for cred cards, but it's only for a year, it seems. Oh well, I'll take what I can get.

What are better orgs in your opinion? I'm clueless and have never fired a gun but I'm a hippy bill-of-rights literalist who sees the 2nd amendment as fairly straightforward.

Jews for the Protection of Firearms Ownership and the Pink Pistols are my favorites.

Hard to marginalize those groups as a bunch of inbred redneck hicks from Alabama.

I never understood minority rights groups who also supported disarming minorities in the face of an armed majority...how does that work?

It's easy to marginalize JPFO and Pink Pistols as small fringe groups without very many members. That's where the NRA wins out. The NRA takes a lot of flak, a lot of it deserved (they tried to spike the Heller case, for instance, back before it was called Heller, and only jumped on board when it was clear they couldn't stop it--and looked like it might be a big win with the NRA left behind.) But they do a lot of great things, and a lot of their critics wouldn't own any guns if it weren't for the NRA. They also do all the less political stuff like teaching everyone from children to police officers to shoot, teaching gun safety, and sponsoring a zillion kinds of competitive shooting.

(I'm a member of all the organizations discussed here as well as Gun Owners of America. I'm not opposed to any of them, just pointing out that they all have points to make.)

NRA and JPFO are about to merge, on account of free membership. :qleft2:
