I'm pretty sure I saw Phil Baroni throwing a Mortal Kombat Uppercut and comboing into a Hadouken in his last fight...

Strong wrestlers that have never been swept in MMA? Maybe St Pierre?

What makes you think wrestlers don't get swept in sub wrestling?
Thanks for bringing all those up. I was thinking about the freestyle guys (good call on Carlos/Hughes. That fight was during the ban and I missed it)

Its a really interesting pattern. Lindland, Couture, and Henderson are all Greco. Of the 9 sweeps you mentioned, 7 were against greco guys. I think there is definitely something to be said for the base of a freestyle wrestller.

Which ones in particular? Coleman hasn't been swept, I don't think, but he's hardly submission-proof in the guard.

Lytle swept Hughes as well, BTW.

I think there have been more high-level Greco guys successful in MMA, especially in the US, than freestyle and that's why I mentioned more of them.

Silva swept Lutter after being mounted, while having his face pounded on.

Almost... it was a Dragon Punch/Hadouken combo finished with a Tatsu Maki Sen Puu Kyaku. He plays a lot of old school SF2 for his training.

As a person who has wrestled freestyle, collegiate (folkstyle) and greco-roman, I respectfully disagree on the grounds that there isn't that much of a discernible difference between the base of a freestyle versus a greco-roman wrestler. Base is critical in wrestling, regardless of which flavor a person trains.

Perhaps you typed that because freestylers are usually really good at not being turned onto their backs. I understand, but I still don't think it makes for a significant disparity in skill.

JNP: It might have more to do with comfort level. The folkstyle/freestyle guys I've grappled with don't want to be on their backs for any reason, ever. They had playing guard. Sometimes this makes them less likely to go for subs on top, or work GnP unless they are super super secure in their base.
Are Greco guys just less afraid of ending up on the back because of differences in the way their rules work? Maybe they are just more willing to try to GnP from less stables positions leading to getting swept more?

No, it's equally as bad to have your back pointing at the floor in Grevo as in freestyle or folkstyle.

I was just pointing out that most of these sweeps are against Greco guys. I'm not qualified to say what the reason is.

I'm gonna be Kitanon's parrot and say "BASE! BAWK! BASE!" Also mimicking what others have said, sweeps require control of peoples limbs. I would love to see some more good sweeps especially a flower sweep/omoplata sweep.
