Important thing to remember about open palm strikes is that they can transition into grabs much faster than a fist.

Consider this food for thought as well... palm strikes are often better suited for attacking the face of someone much taller than you.

Anyone ever have any experience in throwing a palm strike as a block to an incoming fist? Tried that once and it seemed to shake my partner up a bit, but I wonder how effective such a technique would be outside a teaching situation. Meeting force head on with force?

Yes if you mean using the palm up and blocking the the wrist kind of bridging... it is IMO an effective block which has a lot of power and allows for quick application of another strike because you have loaded the striking hand....
